Djokovic reaches Paris Olympics quarterfinals, Medvedev out

PARIS — Novak Djokovic is back in the Summer Games singles quarterfinals for the fourth time in five appearances at the Olympics. What he really wants, of course, is a gold medal, pretty much the only significant achievement missing from his remarkable resume. It might be time to apologize to Eugenio Suarez, Diamondbacks fans

Raise your hand if you at any point this season deemed Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez to be cooked. Garbage.

“Cut him!” you said. “Let Deyvison fly!” you screamed at the TV.

Yeah, you all are sheepish about it. You in the back, get your hand up. We saw your tweet.

Time to apologize. If you aren’t good at apologizing, there is this semi-official apology form created by X user @Marxiners to help you out.

You may choose your reasons for being wrong:

– The media convinced me he was washed

– I miss Longo

– I don’t know ball

– I was jealous of Geno’s good vibes

– Mercury was in retrograde

Many D-backs fans are coming to the realization they might’ve been wrong for giving up on one of Arizona’s biggest offseason acquisitions.

It’s true his average tanked at .192 and OPS fell to as low as .575 in late June.

A month later, with a game to go in the month of July, the third baseman is in a completely different place.

After his three-homer, five-RBI game Tuesday in a 17-0 shellacking of the Washington Nationals, Suarez’s average is up to .227. His OPS (.721) is now seventh on the team, not terrible considering he struggled mightily for the full months of May and June. He’s hit 10 dingers this month!

Diamondbacks fans are saying their sorries.

Ratings for every Rams running back in Madden 25 Ratings for every Rams running back in Madden 25

Kyren Williams is viewed as one of the better running backs in the NFL after his breakout season in 2023, but the ratings gurus at EA Sports don’t exactly share that sentiment. With player ratings for “Madden NFL 25” being released this week, we found out how the Rams’ running backs are rated in the upcoming game.

Williams came in with an 84 overall rating, putting him 18th among all running backs. That feels a bit low, especially with Kenneth Walker being an 88 overall and even D’Andre Swift being an 85. Blake Corum has the second-highest rating among Rams running backs at 75 overall, a solid number for a rookie.

Check out several important ratings for the Rams’ running backs in Madden 25 below.

Puka Nacua was voted the 33rd-best player in the NFL entering 2024 season Puka Nacua was voted the 33rd-best player in the NFL entering 2024 season

It didn’t take long for Puka Nacua to establish himself as not only one of the best wide receivers in football, but one of the top overall players in the league. On Monday, NFL Network continued revealing its Top 100 Players of 2024 list and Nacua made his debut in the top 35.

He was voted the 33rd-best player in the league by his peers, an impressively high ranking for the second-year receiver. He’s the highest-ranked Rams player on the list this year; Matthew Stafford was ranked 42nd, Cooper Kupp is 69th and Kyren Williams is No. 78.

Considering rookies never make the top 100 list, it’s remarkable that a player only in his second season is ranked as high as Nacua is. It shows the level of respect he’s already garnered around the league, with other players viewing him as a premier talent after just one season.

As a rookie, Nacua caught 105 passes for 1,486 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season and added another nine catches for 181 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ playoff loss to the Lions. He’s off to a strong start in training camp, too, which could have him on a path to an even better 2024 season.

Former Diamondbacks reliever Reyes Moronta dies

Former major league reliever Reyes Moronta, who spent a 2022 stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks, died Sunday in a traffic accident, according to reports. He was 31 years old.

According to El Pregonerod.com, he was in an accident while riding a four-wheeler near his father’s house in the Dominican Republic.

The last team he played for, Bravos de León in the Mexican League, posted of his passing Sunday night.

He had just been released by Bravos de León on Thursday and was set to play for winter league team Águilas Cibaeñas in the Dominican Republic, who also posted a message mourning his death.

In MLB, Moronta most notably played for the San Francisco Giants from 2017-21, where he appeared in 136 games and posted a 2.65 ERA.

He also suited up for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2022) and Los Angeles Angels (2023).

Moronta was designated for assignment by the Dodgers in 2022 and was claimed by Arizona. He appeared in 17 games for the D-backs through the rest of that season, posting two saves and allowing seven earned runs over 14.0 innings.

Even after signing Jerry Jacobs, Rams open to adding another CB Even after signing Jerry Jacobs, Rams open to adding another CB

The cornerback position has been bitten hard by the injury bug this training camp. The Los Angeles Rams lost Derion Kendrick to a torn ACL, sidelining him for the entire 2024 season. A day later, Darious Williams strained his hamstring and is considered week to week.

The Rams moved quickly by signing former Lions starter Jerry Jacobs, but they may not be done making moves in the secondary. Sean McVay said Saturday that the team would be open to adding another cornerback.

“He’s played good football,” McVay said of Jacobs. “He has some good tape out there. Aubrey [Pleasant] has a history with him from his time with him in Detroit, so that was important. Then there’s still some other guys that we might have the possibility of being able to bring in. When you lose two corners, at least in the immediate future in terms of we know that Derion is going to be for the year and then Darious will at least be kind of a week at a time, we wanted to make sure that we didn’t add to the other guys that are on this roster with their workloads. It can kind of have that cumulative effect and you don’t really want that to occur. He’s had good tape out there, ultimately.”

Tre’Davious White will be one starter and Williams is expected to be the other starter when healthy, but the depth after that gets questionable. Tre Tomlinson is someone to watch as a second-year player and Shaun Jolly has some experience playing in the slot, but the Rams could use bodies at cornerback until Williams returns.

Ahkello Witherspoon is still available and McVay wouldn’t rule out him returning to the Rams, so he could be an option, as well.

Kevin Durant, Tyus Jones headline glorious weekend for Suns fans

Rejoice, Valley sports fans. Weekends like this don’t happen very often.

We received a Hall of Fame induction for Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzalez; a Hall of Fame performance from Kevin Durant at the Paris Olympics; and a new starting point guard for the Suns.

The latter is a really big deal.

The addition of Tyus Jones gives the Suns a legitimate floor general. He’s been widely acclaimed as the best backup point guard in the NBA. Along with Monte Morris, the Suns have added a pair of point guards who specialize in taking care of the basketball.

That was a huge problem for the Suns in 2023-24.

Jones also represents a huge coup for Mat Ishbia, the hyperaggressive owner of a second-apron franchise trapped in salary cap purgatory.

Jones agreed to play for one year at a minimum salary ($3.3 million), far below his market value. He’s betting on a breakthrough season in Phoenix that propels him to NBA riches next summer. He’s surely been guaranteed a spot in the starting rotation, and either way, clearly placing his trust in Ishbia.

This is truly a Jerry Colangelo moment for the Suns owner. During his stewardship of Valley sports, Colangelo built impeccable credentials with professional athletes. He was a player-friendly owner who built first-class environments on handshake deals, on mutual trust.

At times, Ishbia’s relentless optimism has felt like gaslighting, especially after last year’s debacle. But he has delivered yet again. And for a team that watched three players decline player options, including Eric Gordon, the addition of Jones provides a renewed rush of optimism and belief. It confirms that the Suns are back in the game, admitting and solving their point guard problem in one stunning surprise, when everyone thought they were done for the offseason.

Durant’s performance didn’t hurt, either. The Suns star shook off concerns about injury risk, dropping a performance that reminded everyone of his pedigree. Durant was making his first appearance for Team USA following a calf injury and quickly absorbed a cheap shot that was intended to test his voracity.

He also came off the bench to make his first eight shots, five of them three-pointers. In the context of the Olympics, his shooting performance literally caused the world’s jaw to drop.

After the game, a triumphant Durant danced around a thorny question, how he seemed to be displaying a sense of joy basketball fans haven’t seen in a while.

Either way, it was a great turn of events for basketball fans in Arizona. Here’s hoping Durant’s dominance and happiness lasts for many months to come.

Durant lights it up, Booker connects in Team USA’s opening Olympic win

For the uninitiated, welcome to the Team USA Kevin Durant experience.

Durant scored 23 points in 17 minutes of a 110-84 win over Serbia to kick off pool play at the Paris Olympics.

Sunday was an intriguing opener for a few reasons.

For one, the Americans kicked the crap out of the Serbians in Abu Dhabi just 11 days prior by 26 points, the best Team USA looked during its five-game showcase tour. Secondly, head coach Steve Kerr shared his displeasure with the team and let that be known between the last exhibition against Germany and the opener in Lille. Kerr was vocal about his group’s lack of energy and pace at times in those games, adding intrigue to Sunday to see if he elicited a response.

He did not, from the jump at least. Joel Embiid and Stephen Curry both turned the ball over on inbounds passes less than four minutes in, leading to immediate open layups in transition for Serbia.

Devin Booker knocked down back-to-back 3s to silence a 10-2 Serbian start and settle the Americans. A few minutes later, he checked out for Kevin Durant, and Durant took over that role and the game in general from there. Across his 8:39 in the first half, Durant went 8-for-8 from the field, including five 3s. The shorter FIBA line is less like a cheat code for Durant and more like he has hacked the mainframe. Durant entered the day shooting 48.8% from 3-point range in FIBA tournaments.

Despite a 12-for-18 mark from 3 for the Americans at halftime, they only led by nine (58-49). Curry was constantly targeted defensively and had a rough half on that end while Embiid’s two-way performance was even worse. There just isn’t enough margin of error against a team as good as Serbia to be afforded that and the other general turnovers Team USA committed to still blow teams out.

That is the key for Team USA through this tournament. Because in the second half, it was just solid, avoiding big mistakes and capitalizing when opportunities were presented. There was no Herculean effort from an opposing individual or crazy shot-making, two variables that will pop up for the United States at some point. So without major slip-ups for Team USA in the last two quarters, it was a 52-35 rout.

Booker, like his Phoenix Suns teammate Durant, was also his usual Team USA self, connecting and filling in gaps where he could. As a starter, he finished with 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and two steals in 26 minutes, the second most on the team.

He played good defense, made the right passes, knocked down shots and inserted energy wherever he could. Notably, Booker found Embiid a few times in the mid-range area during scattered possessions, trying to get the big man some rhythm.

The biggest surprise of the rotation pecking order came with Derrick White getting a nod off the bench in favor of Jayson Tatum. Matchup-wise, it made a lot of sense. Serbia’s playmaking guards were a problem out of the gates and Charlotte Hornets guard Vasilije Micic is Serbia’s engine as a reserve, captaining the minutes when Jokic rests. Tatum, however, just starred for the title-winning Boston Celtics.

With that said, Tatum struggled to adapt to a lesser rule in Tokyo, even though he was able to put up numbers in some of those games. While his slashing was a benefit during the exhibition tour, he and Anthony Edwards together off the bench yielded a bit too much iso ball that led to too many midrange pull-ups.

Durant began the tournament coming off the bench after missing Team USA’s entire exhibition tour due to a calf strain. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported from France there has been a consistent dialogue between Durant, the Phoenix Suns’ staff and Team USA throughout the lead-up to Sunday for the injury sustained at the start of July. Extreme caution has been exercised, with Durant looking the part of someone ready for legitimate minutes in pre-game warmups back in London a week before the Olympics got underway.

Expect to see him back in the starting lineup on either Wednesday against South Sudan or Puerto Rico on Saturday.

LeBron James added 21 points, seven rebounds and nine assists on 9-of-13 shooting. He’s 39 years old. Crazy.

Pretty much everyone for Team USA looked good after those early struggles. Jrue Holiday continued his awesome glue-guy minutes from Tokyo alongside Booker with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. There is no wrong choice for Kerr between Holiday or Booker as the fifth starter.

US stays alive with win over New Zealand in Olympic men’s soccer

MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Djordje Mihailovic converted a penalty as the United States pounced early in a 4-1 victory over New Zealand on Saturday to stave off possible elimination at the Olympics.

A loss in Marseille could have ended the Americans’ chance to advance to the knockout round in just their second Olympic appearance. The U.S. had lost to France in its Group A opener.

Mihailovic calmly hit the penalty in the eighth minute after Nathan Harriel was brought down in the box by Matthew Garbett.

Four minutes later, senior player Walker Zimmerman made it 2-0 when he poked in a goal in a scramble in front of the net following a free kick.

Gianluca Busio scored on a rebound at the half-hour mark and celebrated by dancing with teammate Kevin Paredes. Paxton Aaronson added a fourth goal in the 58th.

New Zealand avoided the shutout with Jesse Randall’s late goal.

New Zealand’s 2-1 opening victory over Guinea had put the team in a strong position to advance. The OlyWhites, as they are known, started the day second in the group to France.

The United States is set to play Guinea in its final group match Tuesday in Saint-Etienne. New Zealand plays France in Marseille.

New Zealand is making its fourth Olympic appearance. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Games after being disqualified for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for using an ineligible player at a qualification tournament.

PFF: Cardinals’ Michael Wilson a sleeper fantasy football pick for 2024

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson is looking to take a step forward in his sophomore season as he battles for the WR2 spot on the depth chart.

Pro Football Focus’ Nathan Jahnke has Wilson as a sleeper fantasy football pick for the 2024 season with an average draft position of 16.08 (16th round, 8th pick).

Wilson was a third-round pick by the Cardinals last season and was immediately put in as their Z receiver. He had a slow start in Week 1, leading to a reduction of playing time, but he rebounded in Week 2 leading to his playing time getting restored and was WR40 from Weeks 2-8. He accomplished this despite having Joshua Dobbs as his quarterback.

With Marquise Brown leaving in free agency and Rondale Moore being traded to the Atlanta Falcons, Jahnke has Wilson being much more of a impactful deep threat option this season.

The exciting part about Wilson this season, outside of his health, is that he was more of a deeper threat. His 14.1-yard average depth of target was among the top-10 wide receivers last season who ran 400 routes. With Brown off the roster, he could see even more deep targets. Murray has the third-highest accuracy percentage among quarterbacks on deep passes over the last four seasons among those with 50 or more deep attempts. He’s also the most consistent on accurate-plus throws or throws where the pass is perfectly accurate or away from coverage.

How does Wilson look going into 2024?

In his rookie season in 2023, Wilson played in 13 games had 38 receptions for 565 yards and scored three touchdowns. Wilson did miss four games with a shoulder injury but returned the last four weeks of the regular season.

Wilson enters his second year as part of a revamped receiving group after the departures of Moore and Brown, as the Cardinals added Harrison in the draft and Zay Jones and Chris Moore in free agency.

They join Greg Dortch and tight end Trey McBride, the latter of whom led the Cardinals in receiving last season with 81 receptions for 825 receiving yards and scored three touchdowns.

A.J. Puk trade grades: Diamondbacks get thumbs up in deal with Marlins

By most accounts, it’s a near toss-up whether the Diamondbacks or Marlins got the best of a trade that shipped reliever A.J. Puk to Arizona while Miami added two prospects in infielder Deyvison De Los Santos and outfielder Andrew Pintar.

Both teams helped their current situation.

The rebuilding Marlins gained a 21-year-old slugger in De Los Santos, who comes with a red-hot Triple-A resume this season but questions about his defense and swing-happy approach. Pintar has some upside value, too.

Meanwhile, the D-backs made sure to improve their team immediately by adding Puk, a lefty, who despite a bad start to the year has been dealing out of the bullpen in the past few months. His strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at 7.50 over June and July, while this month over 30 plate appearances he’s only allowed a single hit.

Here’s a review of baseball analysts’ opinions on the deal, which generally were positive for each team.

ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle gives D-backs’ A.J. Puk trade a B+

D-backs grade: B+

Marlins grade: C+

Assuming (Paul) Sewald retains the bulk of the save opportunities, Torey Lovullo can unleash a nasty lefty-righty set-up combo of Puk and smoke-throwing Justin Martinez, slotting Ryan Thompson, Joe Mantiply, Kevin Ginkel and the rest according to matchups. As a recent starter, Puk has the flexibility to work more than one inning when needed, which will help the Snakes shorten games.

Puk has two more arbitration seasons left after 2024, making him more than a short-term pickup, so he should be a core part of the Arizona bullpen over the next few years. For Arizona, he’s more than worth the prospect cost …

The Athletic staff likes Puk deal for the D-backs

Tim Britton

D-backs grade: A-

Marlins grade: B

While the ill-fated move to the rotation drags down Puk’s overall numbers this year, his relief numbers since the start of last season are strong: a 3.31 ERA and 31.2 percent strikeout rate. He comes with two more years of team control, meaning he can be a central figure late in games for a while for Arizona — in the mix with Kevin Ginkel to replace impending free agent Paul Sewald. It’s a move that helps the present and future.

Chad Jennings

D-backs grade: B+

Marlins grade: B

Lefties have never hit Puk much, and that’s big for the Diamondbacks, who currently have only one left-handed reliever in Joe Mantiply. Arizona solves one short-term issue and gets to keep Puk under control for two more seasons.

Britt Ghiroli

D-backs grade: A

Marlins grade: B-

While Marlins closer Tanner Scott has dominated trade rumors, Puk is another solid lefty option whose reputation was perhaps most hurt by a terrible start to the season as a starter. Puk as a reliever, though, has been excellent. He’s throwing harder, his walk-to-strikeout ratio is among the best in baseball and he has seemingly gotten better as the season has progressed, with nine scoreless outings in July.

John Little named head coach of Suns’ G League affiliate

The Suns hired John Little as the head coach of their G League affiliate, the Valley Suns announced on Thursday.

HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto first reported the news.

Little has familiarity with new Suns coach Mike Budenholzer after he spent all but the first year of Budenholzer’s Milwaukee Bucks tenure as an assistant for the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ affiliate.

Among players he will also work with in the Valley are two-way players, Jalen Bridges and Collin Gillespie, who can each play a maximum of 50 NBA games and can otherwise get G League minutes. The Suns have one more two-way slot open.

Little will also coach players the Valley Suns selected in an expansion draft in June, such as Quinndary Weatherspoon, who has played well in Vegas for the Summer Suns.

Last season, Little was the associate head coach of the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate. He helped lead the team to its first G-League Finals appearance last season.

With Maine, he gained further experience as a developer working with Jordan Walsh, a defensive-minded wing Boston had just drafted, similar to what Little might be able to work with in Suns first-round pick Ryan Dunn.

As a player, Little was a shooting guard with nearly a decade of overseas experience. He then was a video assistant at his alma mater, Northern Iowa, for two seasons before taking the Herd job.

Sean McVay: Kyren Williams will lead Rams RBs but 'we'll be smart' about workload Sean McVay: Kyren Williams will lead Rams RBs but 'we'll be smart' about workload

As talented as Kyren Williams is, he also comes with some legitimate injury concerns. During his rookie season in 2022, he broke his foot in OTAs and sprained his ankle on the opening kickoff, costing him seven games. Last year, he injured his ankle in Week 6 and missed four games because of it.

In his first two NFL seasons, he’s been placed on injured reserve twice – and that doesn’t include the broken hand he suffered in the Rams’ playoff loss to the Lions. That’s not a great track record, to say the least.

The Rams are a much better team when Williams is on the field, which is why they’re going to do what they can to keep him healthy. That plan included drafting Blake Corum, who can help spell Williams and take some of the wear and tear off of him.

Sean McVay was asked Wednesday about being cautious with Williams and he acknowledged the need to “be smart” with the team’s starting running back in order keep him fresh for a potential postseason run. He also reiterated that Williams is going to be the starter and lead the running back room, which isn’t a surprise after the season he just had.

“I think the thing we have to be smart (about) is once we get into the regular season, in terms of the amount of touches. We’ll be smart,” McVay said. “We’re always intentional about what those guys’ workload progressions look like but you don’t get better at football without practicing. When I’ve kind of talked about that, what I’m mainly talking about is the amount of carries that he did a great job of being able to handle last year. But if you want to be able to hopefully get an opportunity to play after those 17 games, hopefully stay healthy through those 17, knowing what an instrumental part he is going to be, you want to be smart about that. So that’s where we can be mindful of it. In the meantime, he’s going to go, he’s going to lead the way for that running back room and I thought he started off on the right foot today.”

The Rams were 8-4 when Williams was active last season 2-3 when he was out. When he rushed for at least 80 yards, they were 7-1. McVay knows how much better the offense is when Williams is available and he loves what he’s seen from the third-year back already this offseason.

With Williams being a full participant in training camp after missing OTA sessions in the spring, McVay is happy to have No. 23 in the backfield again.

“Looked pretty good to me. I said on a couple of runs, ‘Man, did I miss you in the offseason.’ What I thought was cool is he’s got such a good feel, such an ownership, such a good pace through the hole and then I thought that elevated the rest of the backs,” McVay said. “I thought Blake Corum had some really good runs. I thought Ronnie Rivers, Boston Scott. But I think it starts with Kyren and it was great to have him out here. He’s just got such a good energy that this guy loves playing football. I love working with him and certainly didn’t see anything that looked any different than the stud that we know.”

Corum is going to get his opportunities this season as the No. 2 back, which will have to come at the expense of Williams’ snaps. But the Rams also drafted Corum as an insurance policy in case Williams gets hurt again. They’re similar backs so if Williams does go down, Corum should be able to seamlessly step in as the starter.

We don’t yet know how McVay will divvy up the carries between Williams and Corum, but it’s clear Williams is the top back still.

Devin Booker, Diana Taurasi continue support for each other in Olympics

PHOENIX — The representation for the Phoenix Suns and Mercury organizations at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris is up there with any NBA/WNBA teams and headlined by the two faces of the franchises.

Mercury guard Diana Taurasi is pursuing a record sixth gold medal, which would be the most for either the men or women in American basketball. Suns guard Devin Booker is going for a modest No. 2 after snagging his first in Tokyo. They are joined by the Mercury’s Kahleah Copper and Brittney Griner, plus the Suns’ Kevin Durant, who is the all-time men’s leading scorer seeking a record fourth gold.

Booker is entering his 10th season, a number tough to wrap your head around considering how young he still seems (and is at the age of 27!). Through the whole journey in Phoenix, Taurasi has been there as a mentor. Having the greatest of all time and someone who has been in the Valley since 2004 in that role speaks for itself.

“It’s meant everything,” Booker said at Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas. “She took me in under her wing Day 1 in Phoenix and I’ve returned it. But it’s not tit for tat — it’s a real love there that still exists. I was just at the game last week. Just inspiration.”

That last bit there is probably the most important.

Among many other things, Taurasi was featured in the commercial for the launch of Booker’s signature shoe with Nike.

Both are frequent guests at the other’s games and have supported each other throughout this last decade. And perhaps the last significant moment in that joint effort — while both are still playing at least — will be halfway across the world in France.

Both of them speak highly of what their connection has meant over the years.

Taurasi recently turned 42 and has achieved it all. Whether it’s what she’s done already or is still managing to do at her age, it would be difficult for Booker not to get an extra jolt from watching the G.O.A.T. operate.

Taurasi has watched Booker’s career develop from the day he was drafted to now. What she’s seen goes far enough to hope her son can take something from how Booker has done things in Phoenix.

“If Leo can grow up like anyone, I wish he was like Book,” Taurasi said Friday. “From the day he got to Phoenix, he was a grownup, he was serious about basketball. The way he approached it on the court, off the court — I love everything about Dev. To be able to share the Olympics with him in Paris, we already did Tokyo a couple years ago. To see his work ethic.

“And the thing I love about Dev more than anything is he’s loyal. We know how professional sports are, the ups, the downs and it’s not an easy landscape to navigate but he always does it with the most respect and the most loyalty.”

Diamondbacks’ Brandon Pfaadt becoming one of MLB’s best at getting deep in games

Not many starting pitchers around Major League Baseball are pitching deep into games as consistently as Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt.

Pfaadt put together arguably his best start of the season on Sunday at Wrigley Field, outdueling Cubs All-Star Shota Imanaga. Imanaga started the game with five hitless innings but exited down 1-0, as Pfaadt delivered seven shutout frames with one hit allowed and seven strikeouts.

The 25-year-old has recorded 21 outs three times this season, which is not as eye-popping as how often he gives the D-backs six quality frames.

Pfaadt is one of 11 pitchers in MLB with 15 starts of six-plus innings and one of 12 with 19 starts of 5-plus innings. He has a team-leading 20 starts this season and only exited before the end of the fifth inning one time. That outlier occurred at Petco Park when he took a comebacker off the leg and exited for injury, not performance. He had thrown 4.1 innings and allowed one earned run.

“I think number one goal is innings pitched,” Pfaadt told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo. “Me being aggressive every start, early on I’m giving them something to hit and being aggressive. That’s what helps me get deeper into games, into that sixth, seventh inning. Those 1-2-3 innings are the most important part of being able to do that, because obviously if you have 20-30-pitch innings, that racks up the pitch count.

“Just focusing on being aggressive, going out there and throwing quality strikes. I think last year we kind of got into trouble with just throwing strikes and not quality strikes. I think that’s where we’ve made the adjustment in the postseason last year and coming into this year.”

Pfaadt has been masterful at getting ahead of opposing hitters, throwing first-pitch strikes 70.6% of the time. Only Milwaukee’s Tobias Myers and Boston’s Nick Pivetta have higher rates, and Pfaadt has thrown approximately 40 more innings than either of them. That has helped him keep the walks down to 5.5%, No. 11 in baseball.

Home runs were a problem when he came up last season from the get-go. He has not been immune this season, most commonly allowing them with the fastball — although his last three starts have been long ball free.

Part of the equation that has led him to being so efficient is the continued development of the sinker. It has been his main put-away pitch this season. With his ability to tunnel, the sinker and sweeper split the plate and can look like this:

He threw the sinker 9.9% last season — mostly after his first MLB stint — and that is up to 21.1% this year.

“I think that the sinker opened up the four-seam a ton,” Pfaadt said. “I feel just as comfortable throwing a sinker as a four-seam now and I think it’s benefited everything the most, just that sinker coming into play and keeping them off the fastball just a little bit more.

“That sinker opens up the offspeed just as much as the four-seam. So being able to use both fastballs to righties and lefties, I think that’s kind of where we’ve benefited the most.”

Pfaadt said his start at Wrigley Field was an “A” outing in terms of how his stuff felt, being able to throw all of his pitches in big spots. Arizona lost the game in extras 2-1, but Pfaadt said that’s baseball and his teammates have picked him up many times.

The second-year pro leads the D-backs in innings pitched by far with 120.1. Ryne Nelson is next with 92.1 considering how banged up the rotation around them has been. But the injury fortune is starting to turn around, as Jordan Montgomery and Zac Gallen have come off the injured list with Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez making progress to get back.

“Once we get those guys back, that just builds our puzzle and I think benefits us more than anything,” Pfaadt said. “Especially Merrill and E-Rod. Getting those guys back, they’ve been doing it for years. They’re an ace of their own, and getting those guys back along with the pieces we have, it’s gonna be something special.”

Rams camp preview: Can newcomers elevate LA's secondary in 2024? Rams camp preview: Can newcomers elevate LA's secondary in 2024?

The defensive line isn’t the only thing that’s going to look different for the Los Angeles Rams this year. The secondary has even more changes, though none matching the magnitude of losing Aaron Donald like the D-line did. The Rams brought in Darious Williams, Tre’Davious White and Kamren Curl in free agency, re-signed John Johnson III this summer and also drafted Kamren Kinchens in Round 3.

The talent level is higher this season than it was in 2023, but the vets need to stay healthy and help elevate the play of everyone around them. Behind the projected starters are a bunch of younger players with a lot to prove, giving the Rams plenty to sort out in training camp.

2024 3M Open: One-and-Done Picks & Predictions

Tony Finau

The 3M Open is set to tee off from TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota on Thursday morning. It’s one of the final regular season events remaining on the PGA Tour schedule before the FedExCup playoffs get underway next month, meaning the field will be going full throttle to attempt improving their FedExCup rank inside the top-70 to qualify.

TPC Twin Cities is littered with water hazards, comprised of bentgrass fairways and greens, running up to 13 feet via Stimpmeter. Narrow fairways and four-inch Kentucky bluegrass rough are some of the other obstacles golfers will face this week. In each of its past five events played, the 3M Open winner has reached at least 15-under-par or lower, with defending champion Lee Hodges setting a course record at 24-under-par in 2023.

In this article, I’m recommending golfers worth deploying in one-and-done and survivor league formats at the 3M Open this week. Make sure to follow me on X @Matt_MacKay_ for more free PGA betting insights and advice throughout the week.

Big Guns

Tony Finau

Tony Finau won this event in 2022 and is among the best in the field in strokes gained on approach and around-the-green. Prior to a missed cut at the British Open, Finau had recorded three consecutive top-ten finishes, including two inside the top-five at the U.S. Open and Travelers. If you’ve held onto Finau up until now, don’t hesitate to insert him into one-and-done lineups this week.

J.T. Poston

J.T. Poston has been a strong performer at TPC Twin Cities in each of the past two years. Poston’s 2024 campaign has been a bit up-and-down, but he does rank top-50 in strokes gained around-the-green and putting. His irons and driver have been out of sync, but if Poston gets those going at a course where he’s comfortable playing at, he’ll return big value in survivor contests this week.

Secondary Options

Keith Mitchell

Keith Mitchell is a volatile, streaky golfer this season but he’s gone T5 in back-to-back outings at the 3M Open. Yes, we’re once again relying on historical performance, but Mitchell is top-six in strokes gained off-the-tee and on approach, which bodes well for another top-five performance yet again at TPC Twin Cities this week.

Akshay Bhatia

Akshay Bhatia is making his 3M Open debut but oddsmakers are bullish on the 22-year-old golfer, valuing him as the third favorite in the outright winner market this week. We’ve seen Bhatia win at Valero and blow an opportunity for his second win of the year at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on the final hole. He’s among the best tee-to-green golfers in this field and should have minimal issues navigating this course.

Sneaky Plays

Cam Davis

Cam Davis is among the most consistent performers at this event. Since 2019, Davis has four T25 finishes, and he’s coming off of his outright win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic a few weeks ago. His strokes gained metrics aren’t great but we’ve seen the Aussie record some great performances at this event, so Davis is a solid prospect to use in one-and-done formats at TPC Twin Cities.

Tom Hoge

One of the best iron players on the PGA Tour in 2024 has been Tom Hoge. Hoge had a T20 finish at the 3M Open a year ago and is also ranked second SG: approach and 14th in putting average. It’s a potent one-two combination for a golfer who continues to fly under the radar.

Favorite One-And-Done: Tony Finau

It’s a chalky play but Finau is worth prioritizing if available to use in survivor leagues. He’s recorded three top-five finishes, including an outright win, and almost always finishes inside the top-ten at the 3M Open. He’s well-versed in this course and was riding a heater before the British Open, so Finau’s return to this event should yield an impressive final scorecard.

Tutu Atwell excited about chance to return kicks this year: 'It's going to be dangerous' Tutu Atwell excited about chance to return kicks this year: 'It's going to be dangerous'

Tutu Atwell has struggled to maintain a role on offense in his first three years in the NFL. He has the speed to win downfield but he’s fallen behind other receivers on the depth chart.

One area where he could contribute more is on special teams. He returned 10 punts and five kickoffs as a rookie in 2021, albeit with limited success, but he’s planning to give the return game another crack this year.

During his press conference on Tuesday, Atwell was visibly excited about the opportunity to return kicks. He got some reps at that spot this spring after the NFL announced new rules for the kickoff that make it more like an offensive play and he feels he’s a perfect fit for that role.

“Yeah, no doubt. I’m going to be back there this year,” Atwell said. “We’re going to see some Tutu at kick return. When I found out about the new rule, I was like, ‘Man, dang. Knowing you got guys coming down full speed but they’ve got to wait until I catch the ball, it’s going to be dangerous. I’ll take a chance at that this year.”

The Rams haven’t determined who will return kickoffs this season because there’s still a lot of time until the season begins, but Atwell clearly believes he’s a candidate for the job. He might be undersized but his 4.3 speed is undeniable and could be a weapon in the open field.

“We’ve been practicing it, trying to get a feeling of it, and I had a couple of reps, other guys had a couple reps,” he said. “And it looked good, so we’re going to see. Hopefully we practice it more in training camp and we’re going to see how it goes from there.”

Despite his limited opportunities as a punt returner, Atwell feels comfortable fielding and returning punts. He says the new kickoff setup will be similar to that, only with the advantage of the coverage team having to wait until the returner catches the ball.

That creates some additional space for the returner, which excites Atwell about the prospect of returning kicks.

“It’s similar to the punt return and I get a good feeling of that,” he added. “It’s the same, guys running down, but they’ve got to wait until I catch the ball to go and I think I have an advantage of that.”

Atwell is entering the final year of his rookie contract so he’s got a lot to prove. If he can’t overtake Demarcus Robinson as the No. 3 receiver, maybe he can have a big impact on special teams as a returner.

Matthew Stafford selling Hidden Hills home 2 years after buying it from Drake Matthew Stafford selling Hidden Hills home 2 years after buying it from Drake

Matthew Stafford has been busy in the real estate market since arriving in Los Angeles three years ago. In that short period of time, he’s purchased multiple homes in Southern California, including a $28 million mansion in Hidden Hills that he bought at the end of 2023.

In 2022, he purchased two homes from Drake – yes, that Drake – totaling $11 million, and he’s already moving on from one of those properties. According to Realtor.com, Stafford is selling one of the homes, which he bought for $5 million. He’s listed it for $5.7 million, so slightly higher than what he bought it for two years ago.

The home is 3,645 square-feet and is the larger of the two properties. It has four bedrooms and five baths, sitting on 1.5 acres, and it also comes with an 800-square-foot guesthouse and a heated pool with a pool house.

After selling this home, Stafford will then have two properties in Southern California: His primary residence in Hidden Hills purchased in 2023 and one of the two homes he purchased from Drake.

Cardinals training camp battles: Pass rusher

Arizona Cardinals training camp is nearly here, with players reporting to State Farm Stadium on Tuesday. Along with it come positional battles that’ll help shape the team in 2024.

This time around, there’s no shortage of competition following an offseason of roster revamping and plenty of impactful roles up for grabs. As defensive coordinator Nick Rallis said this offseason, having to make those tough roster decisions is a good problem to have.

What’s going on at pass rusher? Let’s take a look.

Cardinals training camp battles: Pass rusher

Of the positions Arizona revamped this offseason, pass rusher was not one of them. Either Arizona didn’t like the market in free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft or they believe the names returning for another go can take a step forward in Year 2 under the new regime. Going with the latter, three stand out above the rest heading into training camp, beginning with second-year pro BJ Ojulari.

After getting past a knee issue last offseason, Ojulari found a groove within the Cardinals defense behind four sacks, five tackles for loss and a pass defensed across 17 games played. He came in tied for second in sacks and tied for fourth in TFLs despite not starting a game and playing just 37% of available defensive snaps.

The 2023 second-round pick now enters Year 2 with all systems go. And it didn’t take long for those around the team from noticing a clear change in his build and ability during offseason work.

Time and time again, Ojulari was a talking point for players and coaches this offseason.

“I was just talking to (offensive coordinator Drew Petzing) about it. He was like, ‘Man, I can see BJ’s taken a step already in just a couple practices,’” Rallis told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke back in May. “Just in the run game, setting violent edges, playing low, using his length, getting separation, hitting the ball and then winning his rushes.”

“I’ve already said BJ, but I’m going to say it again,” Gardeck said earlier this month when asked about under-the-radar Cardinals. “I think he’s going to be a really special player.”

Speaking of under the radar or underrated players, Gardeck is right there in the same boat.

Quietly racking up a team-leading six sacks and the second-most tackles for loss with seven, “The Barbarian” is coming off one of his best seasons as a pro. On top of his stat line, Gardeck set new marks in games played (17) and defensive snaps (46%).

Now, it’s all about adding more onto the plate, something both he and Rallis want to see in Year 7.

“I want to see him take strides in every aspect of his game, because he is one of the more complete players honestly that I’ve ever been around,” Rallis said on July 11. “I think he’s an extremely good pass rusher, he can cover as good as any outside linebacker can cover and he can win with leverage in the run game.

“He can provide value for us on the line of scrimmage, in space, all of that. If he takes strides in all parts of his game, he’s going to bring that much more value to our defense.”

Rounding out the trio is Collins.

Making the switch from MIKE backer to full-time pass rusher, Collins was counted on in multiple ways, whether it be pressuring the quarterback or dropping back into coverage.

The results weren’t the flashiest, with the linebacker recording 3.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, an interception and three passes defensed, but the coaching staff has remained confident in his ability to improve those numbers in 2024.

Not only would a jump in production be huge for Arizona’s pass rush — which ranked 30th last season with 33 sacks — it would be massive for Collins’ career trajectory after the team opted against picking up his fifth-year option this offseason.

Final verdict

No matter how the depth chart shakes out, the three names above should see ample playing time given Rallis’ love for rotating pass rushers. Victor Dimukeje, who registered four sacks and five tackles for loss, could also be in the mix.

But when it comes to locking in a pair of starters on the outside, Ojulari and Gardeck lead the way.
