Former Phoenix Sun Deandre Ayton reportedly finalizing buyout with the Trail Blazers

Deandre Ayton is finalizing a contract buyout with the Portland Trail Blazers and is set to be a free agent, reported ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Ayton and his representatives reached out to the Blazers about the buyout due to Ayton wanting to play in a “winning situation,” according to Charania. Ayton had $35.6 million remaining on his max contract that would’ve ended next summer.

The 2018 No. 1 overall pick was a Phoenix Sun for five seasons and was a key member of the 2020-21 squad that made the NBA Finals. He is Phoenix’s first ever No. 1 overall pick.

The former Arizona Wildcat had a decent tenure with the Suns, averaging 16.7 points and 10.4 rebounds across five seasons in Phoenix.

He showed promise early on, earning a 2018-19 All-Rookie Team nod, but was never able to capitalize on his lofty No. 1 overall pick expectations.

Ayton was not extended after that NBA Finals run in 2021 and then nearly left Phoenix in the summer of 2022 after signing a four-year, $133 million maximum contract offer sheet with the Indiana Pacers. The Suns matched the contract to retain Ayton, but his play the following year regressed. He was ultimately benched by head coach Monty Williams in Game 7 of the 2022 Western Conference Semifinals.

The rift with then-coach Monty Williams leaked into the next season. He was again benched for backup big man Jock Landale in the conference semifinals against the Denver Nuggets before ending that series — and his Suns tenure — injured and missing a deciding Game 6.

Ayton was ultimately traded just a year later to Portland in September 2023 in the three-team deal that sent Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Suns gave up Ayton and 2025 NBA All-Defensive Second-Teamer Toumani Camara — a 2023 second-round pick — to Portland and received Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, Nassir Little and Keon Johnson.

Allen is the only player among the Suns’ returning trade haul who is still with the team after the release of Johnson, the stretch-and-waive of Little and Nurkic’s trade to the Charlotte Hornets in February.

Ayton’s time in Portland drew mixed reviews. His stats were on par with his career averages, but questions about his effort, a missed game because of icy roads and a back injury caused by sleeping on an air mattress helped define his tenure there.

Ayton played a respective 55 and 40 games in his two seasons with the Blazers. Across 40 games last year, Ayton averaged 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds with a 56.6% field goal percentage.

Ayton’s departure means a reshaped center room for the Blazers who have invested high draft picks for the position in recent years.

Donovan Clingan, the Blazers’ seventh overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft, and Yang Hansen, their recent 2025 draft selection with the No. 16 pick, will replace Ayton’s playing time in the lineup. The Blazers also have centers Robert Williams III and Duop Reath under contract.

Ayton, who turns 27 next month, will have the chance for a fresh start. He is free to sign with any team, which includes teams in both salary cap aprons.

Suns make Mark Williams trade with Hornets official

The Phoenix Suns on Monday announced the completion of their trade with the Charlotte Hornets centering around veteran big man Mark Williams.

“Mark combines imposing size and length with a valuable skill set of finishing ability, rim protection, tough rebounding and passing instincts,” Suns general manager Brian Gregory said in a press release.

“He also plays with a tremendous motor and brings intangible qualities that fit our team identity. His addition bolsters us at the center position, and we are excited to welcome Mark to Phoenix.”

In addition to Williams, the team got back its 2029 second-round draft pick from Charlotte in exchange for guard Vasilije Micić, the draft rights to rookie small forward Liam McNeeley and a 2029 first-rounder (the least favorable of Cleveland, Minnesota and Utah).

Williams is coming off his third season with the Hornets where he set career marks in points (15.3), rebounds (10.2), assists (2.5) and blocks (1.2) per game. He has one year left on his rookie deal and is set to make $6.3 million next season before becoming a restricted free agent.

Vasilije Micić heads to Charlotte in Phoenix’s Mark Williams trade

The 31-year-old Micic was acquired by the Suns at the trade deadline from the Hornets in the Jusuf Nurkic deal. Part of that package included wing Cody Martin, who the team has decided against retaining. Phoenix also gave up a 2026 first-round pick, which more and more looks like the price it had to pay in what was effectively a salary dump.

Nurkic was most recently dealt to the Utah Jazz in exchange or guard Collin Sexton and a 2031 second-round pick.

Micic, unlike Martin, never got a crack in the rotation. He played a total of 21 minutes for the Suns.

The 2014 second-round pick didn’t come over to the NBA until 2023, continuing to dominate European leagues as one of the best pros overseas. He was originally with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who traded him to Charlotte in February 2024 as a part of the Gordon Hayward deal.

Diamondbacks among many National League teams who can play into trade deadline strategy

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks are going to attempt to buck their own history.

In 26 previous seasons, the Diamondbacks have never made the postseason with fewer than 44 wins at the exact halfway point in their schedule — after Game 81, not the All-Star break. The 2025 squad earned a record of 41-40 after 81 games of extreme highs and lows.

Playing in their favor, more teams make the postseason with the third Wild Card slot implemented three years ago. Plus, the Diamondbacks have played competitive baseball into September with lackluster midway records, doing so just last year.

The 2024 Diamondbacks were 39-42 to start the year and finished 89-73, not good enough for a playoff spot in a stacked National League.

“Inconsistent when healthy,” manager Torey Lovullo answered when asked to evaluate the first half. “I’ve expressed that to you guys many times over the first month and a half of the season where I felt we just weren’t playing D-back type of baseball.

“We have been playing a lot better, still inconsistent in different areas but we’re fighting and battling. The injuries haven’t helped us … probably the words that come up mostly is inconsistent and fighting.”

Lovullo said general manager Mike Hazen often asks Lovullo for his opinion on what he should do at the deadline. It is not tracking to be an obvious buy or sell situation with the team struggling to break away from .500, and the Diamondbacks have been clear on the intent to buy if they see a chance to compete despite the number of veterans in walk years they roster.

Other teams are circling, as the D-backs have potentially desirable pieces to fit a championship contender if they sell. There is also the 2019 route, when the D-backs did a little of both by dealing Zack Greinke while maintaining a roster capable of staying competitive.

Entering Sunday, the Diamondbacks found themselves four games back of a playoff spot, within striking distance but needing to hop four teams for the third Wild Card position. FanGraphs gave them a 20% chance at the postseason.

The National League is very competitive with 10 teams at or above .500. To compare, the American League barely has seven with the 41-41 Angels holding on.

“The competitive landscape in baseball is probably as good, if not better, than it’s ever been,” D-backs general manager Mike Hazen recently told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke earlier this month regarding the number of teams in the mix. There are 22 teams within four games of a playoff spot.

Major League Baseball’s trade deadline is nearly one month away, and these summer games will determine whether teams on the playoff bubble lean in one direction or another.

With each team hitting their midway point on the schedule, here’s a review of the National League tiers in terms of the deadline:

MLB early trade deadline tiers at halfway point

Buyers (records entering June 29)

Dodgers (52-32)

The Dodgers have needs despite their monstrous payroll, as USA Today’s MLB insider Bob Nightengale has wrote they are seeking an outfielder and could look for another starting pitcher. Los Angeles has invested heavily in its starting rotation. Just in the past two offseasons, they signed Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a record contract, traded for and extended Tyler Glasnow, courted phenom Roki Sasaki, signed Blake Snell and now have Shohei Ohtani throwing 102 mph fastballs again. A rash of injuries has created openings.

Cubs (49-34)

Their rotation could use help with Justin Steele out for the season, so Miami’s Sandy Alcantara and Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller have been linked to this landing spot. Third base is another area the Cubs may need to upgrade, as well as the bullpen. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer’s contract expires this offseason, so how much will he push with the Cubs holding a lead in the NL Central? The Cubs made an aggressive move over the offseason to trade for star outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Phillies (48-35)

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski recently told The Athletic’s Jayson Stark that the back end of the bullpen would be their focus. The rotation is stacked, but the bullpen lost some weapons last offseason, plus fire-throwing lefty Jose Alvarado got suspended for performance-enhancing drugs this season, making him ineligible for the postseason. Outfield could be another area to watch given the lack of production from the group during the first half.

Mets (48-36)

The Mets’ rotation has taken a beating of late, as Griffin Canning ruptured his Achilles, Kodai Senga suffered a hamstring strain, Tylor Megill sprained his elbow and Sean Manaea experienced a setback in his rehab all within the last few weeks. The Mets are expecting to get contributors back off the IL for both the rotation and batting order. Bullpen help is always a need, and the Mets have monitored the center field market, per The Athletic.

Padres (45-37)

The Padres have a great bullpen, a banged up rotation and a top-heavy lineup that could use reinforcements. Yu Darvish and Michael King are expected to return to the rotation in the second half. San Diego just released Jason Hayward, as left field has been a problem it continues to seek answers for.

Could be buyers

Diamondbacks (41-41)

Bullpen would be the most pressing need, although a controllable starting pitcher who could fill innings next year as Corbin Burnes rehabs from Tommy John surgery could go a long way. The lineup needs Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno to get back from injury, as the offense has been pretty good all year. Pitching is the priority. If the Diamondbacks go the other way, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suarez, Randal Grichuk (mutual option), Jalen Beeks and Shelby Miller could all enter free agency at the end of the year.

Brewers (47-36)

The Brewers just continue to win despite seemingly letting big names go every year. They’ve been on fire with a 22-8 record over their last 30 games, the best in baseball. They are not the easiest team to project, considering their owner Mark Attanasio infamously asked, “Is my job to win a World Series or is my job to provide a summer of entertainment and passion and a way for families to come together?” before the season started and after they traded closer Devin Williams. They certainly have pitching pieces contenders could use if they decide to pull back, but for the moment, they look like a formidable playoff team that would benefit from holding onto their talent.

Cardinals (46-38)

This is a transitional year for the Cardinals in terms of leadership and the roster, and yet they have overachieved with the best defense in baseball. St. Louis is in the last season of longtime executive John Mozeliak as the lead decision maker with Chaim Bloom set to take over. They have pieces to sell if that’s the direction they choose with closer Ryan Helsley, third baseman Nolan Arenado and starters Sonny Gray and Erick Fedde (Arenado and Gray have no-trade clauses).

Giants (45-38)

The Giants already made their big splash by trading for slugger Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. Matt Chapman will get back from a sprained hand to boost the lineup and defense. The bullpen has been terrific, and the resurgence of Robbie Ray has helped the rotation immensely. The Giants have been below .500 over the past 30 games (14-16), and roster depth both offensively and with pitching could be areas to target.

Reds (43-40)

The Reds have built a pretty good pitching staff that is waiting for its ace, Hunter Greene, to return from a groin strain. They have made moves to shed struggling former closer Alexis Diaz and free agent flop Jeimer Candelario, so bullpen help and another bat are areas this group could benefit from. FanGraphs only gives the Reds a 13% chance at the playoffs, the lowest percentage of this tier, but they have a shot.

Braves (38-44)

The Braves have made the postseason every year since 2018, but their chances to return are in peril. The rotation has been beat up all season, and now Chris Sale is on the IL with cracked ribs. Jurickson Profar is set to return from a PED suspension this coming week to help the lineup (he is also ineligible for the postseason), although the Braves will need some improvements from struggling hitters Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris II. Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos told reporters on June 16 that he did not plan on selling.

Likely sellers – pitchers to watch

Marlins (36-45) – SP Sandy Alcantara (6.98 ERA), SP Edward Cabrera (3.78 ERA), RP Anthony Bender (2.27 ERA)

Nationals (34-49) – SP Michael Soroka (4.70 ERA), CL Kyle Finnegan (2.89 ERA)

Pirates (34-50) – SP Mitch Keller (3.90 ERA), SP Andrew Heaney (4.48 ERA), CL David Bednar (2.83 ERA), RP Dennis Santana (1.50 ERA)

Rockies (18-65) – SP Kyle Freeland (5.56 ERA), RP Jake Bird (2.76 ERA), RP Jimmy Herget (3.02 ERA)

Big 12 discontinues football preseason poll after ASU’s surprise title run

Arizona State football won the Big 12 Championship after being picked to finish last in the conference, a worst-to-first run that may never be seen again.

The Big 12 athletic directors and coaches discontinued the preseason poll voted on by media members ahead of the conference’s upcoming July 7-8 media days, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

Preseason all-league teams will still be named, McMurphy added.

The Arizona Wildcats finished 14th out of 16 after they were picked to finish fifth with three first-place votes, while ASU storming up from the low projection continued a conference-wide trend for two of the previous three seasons.

Texas (2023) was the only Big 12 team in the last four seasons to win the conference after receiving any amount of first-place votes before the year.

Kansas State won the title in 2022 after it was picked to finish fifth, and Baylor won in 2021 after it was picked eighth.

While it isn’t unusual for the conference to see an unexpected run like Arizona State’s, it became a major narrative as the Sun Devils made their push for the College Football Playoff, eventually getting in with the help of the conference title.

Many argued Arizona State was unable to jump Boise State in the playoff order and into the Fiesta Bowl because of preseason rankings, which had the Broncos just three spots outside the top 25, while the Sun Devils were nowhere to be seen. ASU was ranked seventh in the final AP poll, one spot ahead of Boise State.

Similar points were made about national perception catching up to Cam Skattebo as a Heisman candidate, but not quickly enough to be a finalist due to his absence from preseason radars.

The Big Ten is the only other conference without a preseason poll.

Ketel Marte caps 5-spot with milestone home run vs. Marlins

PHOENIX — Ketel Marte became the third player in Arizona Diamondbacks history to drive in 500 runs for the club on Saturday against the Miami Marlins.

Marte punched an opposite-field, three-run home run into the Arizona bullpen off Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara to cap a five-run fourth inning. The home run also pushed the Diamondbacks ahead 6-3 after they previously trailed 3-1 entering the inning.

Alcantara started Marte off with a changeup off the outside edge, and somehow Marte extended his arms and got enough of the pitch to lift it just over the wall.

It was Marte’s 16th home run and 35th RBI this season. The D-backs brought nine batters to the plate during the frame, as Randal Grichuk, Jake McCarthy and James McCann each singled to start the rally. After a Geraldo Perdomo RBI knock with two outs, Marte delivered the go-ahead blow.

Only Luis Gonzalez (774) and Paul Goldschmidt (710) have more RBIs as a Diamondback than Marte, who signed a six-year extension with the club in April. Marte passed David Peralta (468) and Steve Finley (479) to crack the top three earlier this season.

It took Marte no time for his 501st RBI with the team, as he delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Marte, who joined the D-backs ahead of the 2017 season, set a career high with 95 RBIs last season.

Cracking the NFL top 100: Which Cardinals make the cut?

In what’s become a yearly tradition, the NFL top 100 list releases next week.

Last season, Arizona had just a lone representative on the player-voted list in safety Budda Baker at No. 89. This time around, though, there’s a case to be made for a handful of Cardinals on the revamped roster.

What is known: It’s confirmed that at least one Cardinal is cracking the list, with one falling in the 100-91 range of next week’s release.

But how many more made the cut?

A look at who could (and maybe should) be included in this year’s player rankings:

Cardinals shoo-ins to crack NFL top 100 list

If there are two names that will for sure be on this year’s ranking, it’s Baker and tight end Trey McBride.

Baker is coming off arguably his best season as a pro behind a career high 164 tackles and 10 tackles for loss operating all over defensive coordinator Nick Rallis’ creative scheme.

“I truly love this defense, because it gives me the ability to kind of be everywhere,” Baker told ESPN’s Mina Kimes on Thursday. This defense, it’s kinda hard to know where I’m going, so that’s definitely special and with the collective players that we have now, it’s definitely exciting.”

Between the two, Baker appears to be the most likely candidate to be in next week’s reveal, especially after finishing 89th a year prior.

McBride, meanwhile, put more than enough on tape to warrant a spot on the ranking for the first time in his career.

Say what you want about his two receiving touchdowns but McBride’s 111 receptions and 1,146 yards highlighted a breakout season for quarterback Kyler Murray’s favorite target.

He also found other ways to get into the end zone, whether it be by a rushing score or fumble recovery touchdown.

All signs point to McBride fighting for the title of the NFL’s top tight end.

There’s a reason why he was rewarded with a hefty contract extension this offseason.

Honorable mentions

James Conner, RB

He may be in the honorable mention tier, but if anyone out of this group has the best shot at being alongside Baker and McBride, it’s Conner, who has earned two top 100 nods in his career.

Last making the ranking in 2022 (No. 80), the running back is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons as the lead man in Arizona’s backfield.

Conner is expected to resume his workhorse role in 2025, though second-year pro Trey Benson could see more snaps come his way after coming along late as a rookie.

Calais Campbell, DL

Campbell has received six top 100 nods since 2015. His highest ranking was No. 14 in 2018.

Despite beating Father Time, Campbell hasn’t cracked the top 100 since landing at No. 79 in 2020.

Paris Johnson Jr., LT

Johnson is close, but his inclusion on the list feels a year away.

One more strong season at left tackle and he’ll find himself on there.

Josh Sweat, pass rusher

Despite his 11-sack regular season in 2022, Sweat has yet to make the NFL top 100.

Maybe that changes in 2025, but it’s doubtful.

Kyler Murray, QB

Murray has three top 100 honors with the most recent coming in 2022.

It’s been a winding road since then, with Murray going down with a torn ACL that year and only seeing eight games in 2023.

Last season was a dose of normalcy for the signal caller, who looked well on his way to making a return to the list early on last year behind a 12-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio in 10 games played. He added another four scores on the ground.

The wheels came off in the second half of the season, though, with Murray tossing eight picks to nine touchdowns the rest of the way. He only found paydirt once more as a runner.

Even with the downturn across the final seven games, Murray seemed comfortable operating in offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and will look to capitalize more on off-schedule plays.

What is the NFL top 100 list?

The NFL top 100 list is voted on by current players, who each select 20 players on a ballot.

This marks the 15th year of the ranking, which can be streamed on X and NFL+. It runs from June 30 (Monday) through Aug. 29.

Arizona signee Koa Peat shows out with double-double in FIBA U19 World Cup opener

Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd and five-star signee Koa Peat are getting on the same page before their season in Tucson by competing at the FIBA U19 World Cup, where Peat had a double-double in Team USA’s opening win.

The Gilbert Perry High standout had 17 points, going 6-for-11 on field goals, adding 10 rebounds and a blocked shot in the 88-73 win over Australia.

He was the only player in double figures for Team USA at the half with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting.

But it was off the score sheet where Peat shined. The 6-foot-8 forward was in the right place on almost every play when he was on the floor, showing that he has a cerebral approach to the game well beyond his years as a basketball player.

Koa Peat and Team USA squad redemption tour

Lloyd, coaching the U19 squad for the first time, and Peat will be on a redemption tour for Team USA after the Americans failed to medal in 2023 without either Wildcat.

Spain took the gold in 2023 after USA had won four of the previous five U19 World Cups.

Peat will be going for his third gold medal in a row in international competitions, as he previously won his last two with the U17 teams.

Team USA features not only Peat, but also the No. 1 incoming freshman in the nation, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa who finished with a team-high 18 points.

Arizona State AD Rossini: Bobby Hurley has trust but work cut out in final contract year

PHOENIX — Arizona State men’s basketball head coach Bobby Hurley received full backing from athletic director Graham Rossini on Thursday despite entering the final year of his contract.

It’s not going to be easy for Hurley, though, as he’s dealing with a nearly complete roster overhaul.

“We’ve got one returning player from last year (Trevor Best), and so I give Bobby and his coaches a lot of credit that they’ve they’ve taken this challenge on, and they understand that we didn’t retain some of the targets that we maybe anticipated,” Rossini said. “We didn’t get some of the incoming recruits that we felt like we were very deep on, but they’ve not backed off from the challenge. They’ve really been aggressive in finding the kind of complementary pieces that can create team basketball.

“But I believe in Bobby Hurley, and I know his back’s against the wall,” Rossini added. “I’m excited about how he’s responded. I’m excited about the work that his coaches have put in. We’ve tried to find all the ways that we can resource our men’s basketball program to compete in a very competitive environment.”

Arizona State went 13-20 in its first year in the Big 12.

Rossini, who is entering his second year as Arizona State’s athletic director, said a goal for ASU’s athletic department is to alleviate the business and entertainment side of sports for their coaches. The AD wants to help all of his coaches do what they do best: coach.

“We need Bobby Hurley to be the best basketball coach he can be,” Rossini said. “We don’t need him to be a media magnate and a ticket seller and a fundraiser — like, we should be taking that responsibility on. We should be freeing him up to lead his team and coach his players at the highest possible level.”

Rossini said he isn’t focused on contracts at the moment, but rather results. He isn’t looking at the basketball roster overhaul as a problem solely for the coaching staff.

It’s a challenge for both the coaches and the administration to solve together.

“I believe in Bobby Hurley, and we’re still developing our relationship,” the athletic director said. “We had a lot coming at us. Last summer as I took the job, we had this incredible rise going on in football, and I didn’t get a chance to spend as much time with Bobby late in the summer, early in the fall, as I would have hoped to. And so we’re still building, building our rapport. And I’m excited to lock arms with Bobby and his coaching staff and figure out, how do we do this together?”

“And, yeah, their backs against the wall,” Rossini said. “We don’t know what lives beyond next April at this point, but we’re also not reserving that that’s going to happen at any one specific moment. That’s going to happen when we get to a decision on where we go next. But for the time being, I want to build my relationship. I want to find out what role I can play in our department, can play in having men’s basketball be as successful as it can be, and we’re going to continue to push those levers together.”

At a press conference held in downtown Phoenix on Thursday, Rossini covered a multitude of topics, including the upcoming 2025-26 athletic season, possible Desert Financial Arena renovations and the state of all 26 sports programs at Arizona State.

Desert Financial Arena renovations timeline for ASU

Rossini said the official plan will be announced shortly, but the probable timeline for the multi-year, multi-phase renovations of the basketball teams’ Desert Financial Arena will begin in summer 2026.

“[We’re] hoping for next summer, right after graduation wraps up with a first phase,” Rossini said. “In a multi-year renovation. We’re going to try to maximize every day during the summer window. We’ve got the benefit, if we’re bleeding into the fall, Mullett Arena enters the conversation. We played volleyball there. We played some women’s basketball there.

“We’re trying to avoid that where we can use May in the summer months to get as much done over a series of years, to get (Desert Financial Arena) updated. And so those are the details that we’re still working through: the full scope, the full construction plan and what adjustments we need to make as a result.”

Rossini says ASU is not cutting sports

Amid uncertainty surrounding NIL reform and the recent House v. NCAA settlement, there have been concerns about whether Arizona State would continue to offer scholarships for all of 26 sports programs.

Rossini says it won’t be easy but reaffirmed Arizona State’s commitment to each of the 26 sports.

“It’s very challenging, but we want to continue to focus on ways that we can accomplish all 26 sports,” Rossini said. “We created them for a reason. They have value to ASU in terms of, again, the connection tool, and for such a dynamic university, such an international university. You look at a lot of our rosters, there’s international athletes on most of them, and that’s really important for our university. So we want to continue to do everything we can to maintain all 26.

“We’ve got 600 athletes from all over the world that are picking us,” Rossini added. “It’s our responsibility to lead them and prepare them for life after sport. We want Lu Dorts and NBA champions. We want Super Bowl MVPs. We want (swimmer) Leon Marchands and Olympians. But we want productive adults leading ASU, ready to take on whatever the world is going to put at them.”
