Sean McVay comments on split with Cooper Kupp for first time, calls him 'an all-time Ram' Sean McVay comments on split with Cooper Kupp for first time, calls him 'an all-time Ram'

The Los Angeles Rams have made the difficult decision to move on from one of their cornerstone players this offseason, informing Cooper Kupp that they intend to trade him at some point soon. While no trade has come to fruition yet, all indications are that Kupp has played his last down with the Rams.

He announced the Rams’ plans on social media earlier this month and now three weeks later, Sean McVay has commented on it for the first time publicly. On the “Fitz and Whit” podcast with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andrew Whitworth, he discussed the decision to move on from Kupp, which wasn’t an easy one.

He shared his love and appreciation for the eight-year veteran, calling him an “all-time Ram” no matter what.

“I’m a better human, I’m a better coach, I’m a better person because of my relationship and the influence Cooper Kupp’s had on me,” McVay said. “His legacy in my life and as a Ram is cemented forever. And we’ve had to have some honest conversations. And here’s the reality, too. I think you always preface it with, you have a responsibility to the collective and it doesn’t mean you’re right. I’ve been wrong before, I’ll be wrong again. Doesn’t change my love, my appreciation, my gratitude for everything that he’s meant.”

As great as Kupp has been for the Rams since being drafted in the third round in 2017, he’s become injury-prone and expensive. With a cap hit of $29.78 million in 2025, McVay and the Rams believe they can better allocate that money elsewhere – and potentially even get something in return for the receiver in a trade.

McVay has nothing but respect and appreciation for what Kupp has helped him accomplish as a head coach, but he no longer fits in the Rams’ plans.

“When you do look at putting together the puzzle, sometimes decisions that you try to be able to make for the collective don’t necessarily fit with people that are so special,” McVay said. “And no matter what he does, he’s an all-time Ram from this point on, whether he played another snap or not for the Rams – or wherever he goes on to have success for however many years he wants to continue to do it. But you try to say it’s business, it’s personal. It all is intermixed. I don’t think you can separate it. I think you acknowledge that tough decisions have to be made.”

Kupp was the MVP of Super Bowl LVI with the Rams, the Offensive Player of the Year and the triple crown winner that season. It was one of the greatest seasons ever by a wide receiver and though Kupp hasn’t come close to matching that production since, he’s still a valuable player in the NFL with his do-it-all skill set.

McVay is going to miss him in Los Angeles but he knows they can look back on the last eight years and feel good about all that they accomplished.

“I love him. He knows that I love him. I couldn’t have more respect for him, even in terms of the way that he handles some of those difficult conversations,” McVay said. “And that’s an inevitable part of it. And I do believe that even though this isn’t an ideal situation, I think there’s going to be a lot of gratitude that I think we both look back on for eight years that, man, what an incredible blessing he’s been. And I’ve always felt a real appreciation and gratitude from him, as well.”

One free agent each NFL team should want to sign in 2025 One free agent each NFL team should want to sign in 2025

We’re less than a month away from the start of NFL free agency, which begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 12. But the legal tampering window opens two days before that on March 10 at 12 p.m. ET, where teams will be able to negotiate with free agents before the official start of the new league year.

The 2025 salary cap hasn’t been set yet, but it will land between $277.5 and $281.5 million, according to NFL.com. A number of NFL teams have some work to do over the next month when it comes to building their 2025 rosters.

Our NFL Wire editors identified one pending free agent (at the time of publication) that each team should sign to help improve their roster. And it seems like guard Trey Lance and edge rusher Josh Sweat will be in high demand.

Matthew Stafford is 'the name to watch' for Raiders, in part thanks to Tom Brady Matthew Stafford is 'the name to watch' for Raiders, in part thanks to Tom Brady

The Las Vegas Raiders need a quarterback as badly as any team in the NFL. They’re desperate to find a franchise signal caller, especially with Pete Carroll taking over as the head coach.

They’ll be in the market for a quarterback this offseason, whether during the draft or in free agency – or even via trade. According to The Athletic, Matthew Stafford is “the name to watch” if the Rams end up trading him, putting them among the teams that could be vying for the veteran quarterback this offseason.

Of course, the Raiders will only have a shot to land Stafford if the Rams can’t sign him to an extension, but it sounds like they’d be interested if it comes to that.

Furthermore, with Tom Brady as a part owner of the franchise, his influence could help lure talent to Las Vegas. According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “the persuasiveness of Tom Brady as a recruiter for the Raiders” is something to keep an eye on.

“It’s why you can’t rule out Matthew Stafford as an option,” he wrote.

Bonsignore also reported that the compensation in any trade for Stafford will be affected by how much money the acquiring team is going to pay Stafford. The Rams reportedly want at least a first-round pick, but interested teams will “try to keep it to” a second-rounder and maybe more.

The Raiders can now be considered one of the many teams that may be interested in Stafford if the Rams move their quarterback, along with the Giants and Steelers – two other teams that have been floated as potential landing spots.

None of this matters if the Rams sign him to a new contract, but that’s not guaranteed to happen.

Rams' Sean McVay and Les Snead skipping NFL combine again this year Rams' Sean McVay and Les Snead skipping NFL combine again this year

The NFL released the press conference schedule for general managers and head coaches at the combine in Indianapolis next week and 30 teams will have at least one of the two speaking to the media.

The two teams absent from the schedule? The Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints.

Once again, Les Snead and Sean McVay are skipping the combine and will stay back home in Los Angeles where they will evaluate prospects from afar.

Unlike the Rams, the Saints typically have their GM and coach in attendance, they just don’t do press conferences from the podiums. So it’s likely that the Rams will be the only team without a GM or coach at the combine.

Below is the full schedule for coaches and GMs next week.

McVay hasn’t attended the NFL combine since 2020 and even that year, he left Indianapolis early before on-field workouts. Snead was in attendance at the combine that year, too, but hasn’t been back since.

It’s not that the Rams don’t value the combine, they just feel they can be more productive evaluating with their team remotely rather than traveling to Indianapolis.

Projected contract values for Alaric Jackson and the Rams' other top free agents Projected contract values for Alaric Jackson and the Rams' other top free agents

In less than a month, the Los Angeles Rams will be able to start signing outside free agents. But from now until the middle of March, they can sign their own free agents to extensions in order to keep them from hitting the market.

It’s not the strongest free-agent class for L.A. this offseason but there are surely at least a couple of players they’d be interested in bringing back – led by left tackle Alaric Jackson.

Spotrac projected the market value for six of the Rams’ top free agents, laying out what their next contracts could look like. Jackson’s market value is far and away the highest among all Rams free agents and he’s the only player Spotrac believes will get a multi-year deal.

Salary cap to be higher than expected: How much space will Rams have in 2025? Salary cap to be higher than expected: How much space will Rams have in 2025?

The NFL informed teams on Wednesday that the 2025 salary cap will be in the range of $277.5 million to $281.5 million, giving them a much better idea of how much space they’ll have this year.

Back in December, NFL.com reported that teams were budgeting for a cap in the range of $265 million and $275 million, so the actual number will be above even the high end of that projection from about two months ago.

Over The Cap has listed the projected cap as $272.5 million this offseason, which means teams will have more space than anticipated. So how much room will the Rams have to work with now?

According to Over The Cap, they’re projected to have about $44.37 million in cap room, which would be 15th in the league. That’s based on a salary cap of $279.5 million, right in the middle of the NFL’s official range.

If the cap ends up being $281.5 million, the Rams will have $46.37 million available, or $42.37 million if the cap winds up on the low end of the range at $277.5 million.

Regardless of where it falls, that will be a significant jump from the last two years. The cap was $255.4 million last year, so it will rise at least $22 million in 2025 and it will increase by at least $53 million in the last two years, as Dan Graziano said.

Rams add another piece to their D-line in Daniel Jeremiah's 1st-round mock draft Rams add another piece to their D-line in Daniel Jeremiah's 1st-round mock draft

The Los Angeles Rams’ defensive line has undergone some significant changes in the last two years. Gone are Aaron Donald, A’Shawn Robinson and Greg Gaines, who were all starters in 2022 and during the team’s Super Bowl run the year prior.

Braden Fiske and Kobie Turner have done a stellar job stepping up as the team’s top interior defenders but outside of those two studs, the Rams are lacking some depth – specifically a run defender in the middle.

That’s why NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah has the Rams picking a defensive lineman in his latest first-round mock draft. At No. 26 overall, Jeremiah mocked Toledo defensive tackle Darius Alexander to the Rams.

Here’s what he wrote about the selection.

The Rams continue to add dynamic players to their young defensive line. Alexander put on a show at the Senior Bowl and he’s starting to generate some first-round buzz in league circles.

Alexander would help the Rams in the middle of their defensive line, especially if Bobby Brown III leaves in free agency. But he wouldn’t necessarily be an ideal selection in Round 1. The 26th pick feels a bit early for him but after a strong week at the Senior Bowl, Jeremiah believes he’s rising up draft boards.

He’s 6-3 and 304 pounds, bringing good length to the position. He’s not a big space-eating nose tackle, however, which could be what the Rams need. They don’t have much size on the interior of their defensive line, particularly if Brown isn’t in the picture. Alexander may not solve that problem.

As a complete defensive lineman, though, he offers upside as a pass rusher and can also hold up against the run on first and second down.

Liam Coen signs former Rams backup QB to Jaguars' roster Liam Coen signs former Rams backup QB to Jaguars' roster

Liam Coen hasn’t been the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach for even a month but he’s wasted no time going back to his Rams roots as he gets going in Duval. After already interviewing two Rams assistant coaches for their offensive coordinator position, as well as James Gladstone in their GM search, the Jaguars are signing a former L.A. quarterback to their offseason roster.

The team announced on Monday that John Wolford has been signed, along with wide receiver Louis Rees-Zammit. Wolford was with the Rams in 2019, 2020 and 2022 when Coen was on the coaching staff, so they have a history of working together. Coen was the assistant QBs coach in 2020 and the offensive coordinator in 2022.

Wolford left the Rams in 2023 when he signed with the Buccaneers, spending most of the 2024 offseason in Tampa Bay when Coen was the offensive coordinator. Clearly, Coen thinks highly of Wolford and wants to give him another shot in Jacksonville.

Rams share punny Valentine's Day cards featuring Matthew Stafford, but not Cooper Kupp Rams share punny Valentine's Day cards featuring Matthew Stafford, but not Cooper Kupp

The futures of Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp in Los Angeles are very much uncertain at the moment, with Stafford needing a new contract and Kupp set to be traded by the Rams.

Kupp didn’t seem overly thrilled about the fact that he’ll most likely be traded, saying in his announcement earlier this month that he doesn’t agree with the decision and believed he’d finish his career with the Rams. It’ll take a minor miracle for Kupp to remain in L.A. and it seems the team is already moving on.

Keeping with tradition, the Rams shared some punny Valentine’s Day cards with their fans on social media and notably, Cooper Kupp wasn’t one of the players featured. Matthew Stafford was, however, which has fans thinking he’ll remain with the Rams.

Others include Sean McVay, Jared Verse, Beaux Limmer, Kevin Dotson and Omar Speights.

Are we reading too deeply into a harmless and funny Valentine’s Day post by the team? Definitely. But it’s no accident that they left Kupp out this year.

And maybe it really is a good sign that Stafford got a card. Who knows?

Colin Cowherd pitches crazy theory about Rams trading Matthew Stafford to Giants and signing Aaron Rodgers Colin Cowherd pitches crazy theory about Rams trading Matthew Stafford to Giants and signing Aaron Rodgers

FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd has a theory about what the Los Angeles Rams might do this offseason. And buckle up, because it’s pretty wild.

Cowherd is by no means a reporter, but he apparently has sources within the league and he said on Thursday that he “made a couple of calls yesterday and a couple of texts this morning” to get the scoop on the Rams and Matthew Stafford.

Cowherd claims the Rams are souring on Stafford because of the contract negotiations, as well as his wife making public statements about the quarterback’s uncertain future in L.A. According to Cowherd, the Rams don’t want to redo Stafford’s deal and give him a big contract, so the FS1 host has a proposal.

He believes the Rams could trade Stafford to the Giants, and according to his sources, they want the No. 3 overall pick in return.

“What the Rams want, I am told, they want the Giants’ first-round pick at No. 3,” he said. “So they probably want a first, a second, a first, a third, but you’ve got to pay Stafford if you’re the Giants. You have to give him a new deal. They’ll probably get a first and a fourth, but let’s just talk about that No. 3 pick. The Rams want that No. 3 pick in the draft because they’re drafting way later. They want to take that pick, move down, and get more picks. Why? So they have extra picks next year when they have to move up to get a quarterback.”

For starters, the Giants would be crazy to give up the No. 3 overall pick for a 37-year-old quarterback – even one as good as Stafford. They’re not a team that’s a quarterback away from contending for a Super Bowl, and they need all the blue-chip players they can get. Trading the third pick, even in a weaker draft class, would be a huge mistake by the Giants.

Cowherd’s theory about the Rams using the No. 3 pick to stockpile selections in 2026 makes at least some sense, especially considering how weak this year’s draft class is at quarterback. They’ll need to draft a franchise QB at some point and it feels more likely to happen in 2026 than this year.

Continuing his pitch, Cowherd proposes that the Rams would then sign Aaron Rodgers as a one- or two-year rental once he’s officially released by the Jets. With Rodgers being from California and needing a fresh start, Cowherd believes he’d be a good fit for the Rams.

“He needs a rehab. Got a house in Malibu. West Coast guy,” Cowherd said of Rodgers. “By the way, in a division with Geno Smith, Kyler Murray, Brock Purdy. Aaron Rodgers’ last 10 games last year, he was good. And remember, that was with a third-tier coaching staff. Now he gets McVay? An established O-line? An excellent young defense? Remember, Matt LaFleur is the OC with Sean McVay. He’s been in that system before, so Aaron knows the system with the Rams. I believe Aaron is craving infrastructure, stability, a head coach he respects, organizational excellence.”

It’s not crazy to think the Rams might have some interest in Rodgers if they do move on from Stafford, but there’s no guarantee Rodgers even wants to continue playing in 2025. He struggled at the beginning of last season and got better as the year went on, but he’s 41 years old and probably doesn’t have much good football left in him.

So if the Rams trade Stafford and bring in Rodgers, what might they do with their first-round pick? Cowherd says they could target Arizona wideout Tetairoa McMillon, who’s viewed as the best receiver in the class.

“If the Rams do move down and get the Giants’ No. 1 pick, don’t be surprised if they don’t draft T-Mac, the Arizona wide receiver, to replace Cooper Kupp, who they’re moving off of,” he said. “He is easily the best receiver in this draft.”

Whew. That was a roller coaster. Cowherd seems to believe all of these moves could happen, and he says the possibility of Stafford going to the Giants “is real,” but this would be quite the shake-up for both the Rams and Giants.

“This sounds crazy, the Matt Stafford to the Giants thing is real, I’m told. I’m told they like Matt Stafford, but he’s old. … Rams want inexpensive, rental quarterback for one year,” he said.

Jaguars complete GM interview with Rams' James Gladstone Jaguars complete GM interview with Rams' James Gladstone

The Jacksonville Jaguars are searching for a new general manager after firing Trent Baalke and a key member of the Los Angeles Rams’ front office is on their list of candidates. The Jaguars announced on Wednesday that they have completed their interview with James Gladstone, who is the Rams’ director of scouting strategy.

Gladstone is one of several candidates vying for the position and he’s the third to officially complete an interview with the Jaguars. Trey Brown and Josh Williams are the only other candidates who have had interviews with the team so far, though four other candidates have been requested to be interviewed.

Gladstone is a big part of the Rams’ draft plans, working closely with Sean McVay and Les Snead to find prospects in the draft each year. He’s been with the Rams for eight years, including the last four as their director of scouting strategy.

Peter Schrager thinks 'there's a chance' Matthew Stafford leaves Rams, names potential replacement Peter Schrager thinks 'there's a chance' Matthew Stafford leaves Rams, names potential replacement

Matthew Stafford has two years left on his current contract but it’s not exactly a foregone conclusion that he’ll be back with the Los Angeles Rams in 2025. After reworking his deal last summer, he’s lacking guaranteed money and could seek a raise this offseason.

The Rams will try to work something out with their star quarterback but it may not be easy. In the event that the two sides can’t come to an agreement on a new contract, Stafford is a candidate to be traded by the Rams.

NFL Network’s Peter Schrager is close to Sean McVay and even he can’t say with any level of certainty that Stafford will remain with the Rams in 2025.

“I don’t think Stafford’s retiring, but I think there’s a chance he might wear another uniform in the near future, based on what the tea leaves are saying,” Schrager told Pro Football Network.

It’s not breaking news to suggest Stafford may not be back with the Rams, but coming from Schrager, who’s friends with McVay, makes it a bit more notable – and worrisome for fans in L.A., too.

As for who might replace Stafford if the Rams move on, Schrager has one idea, and it may not elicit much excitement from the fanbase. He could see the Rams turning to Jimmy Garoppolo, who backed up Stafford in 2024 and will be a free agent this offseason.

Having learned the offense for a year and given his experience in a Kyle Shanahan-style offense, Garoppolo would make some sense for the Rams as a bridge quarterback until they can find a young, future starter.

“As for the Rams, I’ll tell you what, I know it sounds crazy now, but Jimmy Garoppolo is pretty well-liked there this season,” Schrager said. “I know that he’s not necessarily got the career that Stafford has, but he had a nice little season this year for them, so I think he’d be the first option before they look to blow it up and go somewhere totally different and young.”

Stafford reportedly plans to keep playing in 2025 but it remains to be seen which team he suits up for. The Rams make the most sense, given their need at quarterback and considering his fit in the offense, but they need to make it work financially in order for Stafford to return.

Which Rams received votes for awards at NFL Honors? Which Rams received votes for awards at NFL Honors?

Jared Verse was the big winner for the Los Angeles Rams at the NFL Honors show on Thursday night, taking home Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was the only player or coach to win an award this year, a well-deserved honor for the standout rookie from Florida State.

However, he wasn’t the only member of the Rams to receive votes for various awards. Sean McVay was in the hunt for Coach of the Year, Braden Fiske made a run at Defensive Rookie of the Year and Kyren Williams even got more votes for Offensive Player of the Year than Patrick Mahomes.

Here are the final voting results for each member of the Rams.

Coach of the Year

Sean McVay (9th)

1 third-place vote
1 fourth-place vote
4 fifth-place votes

McVay finished ninth in Coach of the Year voting, an award that was won by former Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, now with the Vikings. McVay did a phenomenal job coaching this year with such a young and injury-ravaged team, but it wasn’t enough to win him the award for the second time.

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Jared Verse (1st)

37 first-place votes
10 second-place votes
2 third-place votes
1 fifth-place vote

Verse took home Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, winning the award and becoming the first Rams player to do so since Aaron Donald in 2014. He was dominant as a rookie, leading all first-year players in pressures.

Braden Fiske (3rd)

1 first-place vote
5 second-place votes
11 third-place votes
11 fourth-place votes
6 fifth-place votes

Fiske made a run at Defensive Rookie of the Year but finished third behind Verse and Quinyon Mitchell. He ended the year with 8.5 sacks to lead all NFL rookies this season.

Offensive Player of the Year

Kyren Williams (T-11)

2 fifth-place votes

Saquon Barkley ran away with Offensive Player of the Year, but Williams actually got two fifth-place votes, finishing tied for 11th in the race. He scored 16 rushing touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 1,299 yards, which earned him more votes for this award than Patrick Mahomes (1).

Matthew Stafford's wife weighs in on QB's uncertain future with Rams Matthew Stafford's wife weighs in on QB's uncertain future with Rams

Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams have some business to take care of this offseason. After reworking the quarterback’s contract last summer to effectively make it a one-year deal worth $40 million, the two sides will need to head back to the negotiating table this offseason to get a new contract done.

Stafford still plans to play in 2025 but whether that’s with the Rams remains to be seen. His wife Kelly weighed in on the matter and made it clear that Stafford “wants to win.” He also doesn’t want to “put a team in a bad situation,” suggesting that he won’t handcuff his team with a massive contract that makes it more difficult to build a championship-caliber roster.

In the event that the Rams and Stafford can’t get a deal done, she said, “I love an adventure.”

“My husband wants to win,” she said. “He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation. If you’re catching my drift, you’re catching my drift. I will say the trading away of Cooper? I’m confused because we were one play away from going to the NFC championship. And I think if we go, we win. I have to be the dog in this situation being like, I want the respect for him that he deserves. Yes, I love the city of L.A. I love the city of L.A. With that being said, I love an adventure.”

Stafford still has two years left on his current contract but with much of his guaranteed money being pushed forward into 2024, he doesn’t have a lot of financial security left on his deal. Hence, the fact that he and the Rams need to find a solution this offseason.

Sean McVay and the Rams would probably love to have Stafford back but it’ll take a new contract to keep him in Los Angeles. That’s something both sides need to figure out sooner rather than later, especially now that it’s been reported Stafford wants to keep playing in 2025.

Malik Nabers raves about Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp in wake of cryptic tweets Malik Nabers raves about Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp in wake of cryptic tweets

Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers will neither confirm nor deny what his cryptic “9 and 10” tweets were about, but it’s safe to assume he was referring to Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp.

Nabers, who badly wants improved quarterback play from the Giants in 2025, was asked about his tweets at the Super Bowl this week and while he didn’t directly say they were about the Rams’ stars, he clearly has a ton of respect for both players.

“It’s a pretty good riddle. I don’t know if everybody will solve this one,” he said sarcastically on “Fantasy Football Happy Hour” with Matthew Berry. “I’m not giving it away a lot but I feel like people know what I’m aiming for.”

Berry, being the savvy host that he is, asked Nabers in a general sense what he likes about Stafford’s game. Nabers raved about Stafford’s arm talent and the way he manipulates his throwing angles in the pocket, while also complimenting his knowledge of opposing defenses as a veteran quarterback.

“His arm talent is crazy. His sidearm is crazy,” Nabers said. “The way he throws the ball, his angles, it’s crazy. He knows the defense. He’s a veteran quarterback. He led that team to the playoffs without those receivers he was playing with at the beginning of the season when they were hurt. Then when he got them back, he was able to do a lot of great things. I like the way he throws the football.”

As for Kupp, Nabers left no doubt about it. He’d love to play with No. 10.

Having studied Kupp’s game over the years, he knows he could learn a lot from the All-Pro receiver. And that’s all he wants to do at this point in his young career: learn from the best.

“I watched a lot of Cooper Kupp film, especially when I was in the slot at LSU,” he said. “Just trying to do a lot of option routes. His option route is probably one of the best I’ve seen. Having him in the room and I can learn from that – it’s always great to learn from a veteran. I got a chance to learn from Allen Robinson when he was there in the spring. I learned a lot from him so if I can learn from Cooper Kupp, I can exceed my game, understand a lot. I’m young, so I’m trying to get as much game as possible for years to come.”

So while Nabers didn’t come out and say he wants to be teammates with Stafford and Kupp, it doesn’t take an expert to know what he was referring to with his tweets. He wants both stars in New York with him.

Panthers hiring former Rams cornerback as defensive assistant Panthers hiring former Rams cornerback as defensive assistant

Former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Kevin Peterson has made the transition from playing football to coaching it. Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer reported on Wednesday that Peterson is being hired by the Panthers as a defensive assistant.

Peterson spent three years with the Rams from 2016-2018, primarily on the practice squad, but he did play six games and make one start in 2017. That year, he intercepted two passes and returned them for a total of 42 yards, also recovering one fumble and making 11 tackles.

He finished his playing career with the Cardinals, spending three years in Arizona from 2019-2021 before retiring from football.

Last season, Peterson was on the Colorado State University Pueblo coaching staff, a job he landed after being a coaching fellow with the Rams in 2023.

Report: Rams willing to pay some of Cooper Kupp's contract to facilitate trade Report: Rams willing to pay some of Cooper Kupp's contract to facilitate trade

It’s clear the Los Angeles Rams plan to trade Cooper Kupp this offseason, parting ways with the wide receiver after eight seasons. They’ve informed Kupp of their plans, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to find a team to take him.

With his bloated contract and a $7.5 million roster bonus due in March, finding a trade partner is easier said than done. One way for the Rams to facilitate a deal could be to pay some of Kupp’s remaining contract.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Rams are “at least willing to eat some of the money, potentially paying down the $7.5 million signing bonus.” That could be a necessary move for Los Angeles in order to entice a team to take on Kupp’s contract.

“My understanding is the Rams are at least willing to eat some of the money, potentially paying down the $7.5 million signing bonus which, a lot of that is fully guaranteed for Kupp, maybe easing the burden on an acquiring team, maybe making a trade a little easier,” Rapoport said.

If the Rams trade Kupp before his roster bonus is due in March, the trading team would be responsible for that, which would drive his total cost in 2025 to $20 million instead of just $12.5 million. If the Rams wait until after that bonus is paid, they will be responsible for it, thus lessening the cost for the trading team to acquire him.

It’s possible the Rams and another team can agree to a deal before that bonus is due, with the Rams potentially paying some of it in order to facilitate a trade. It wouldn’t be preferred for Los Angeles, but it might be necessary in order to avoid cutting Kupp outright and only saving $5 million overall.
