Cardinals rookie Walter Nolen III out for rest of season with knee injury

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Walter Nolen III’s rookie season is over after suffering a knee injury Sunday, head coach Jonathan Gannon said.

Gannon also announced a season-ending Achilles injury for cornerback Garrett Williams. Both players will head to injured reserve.

The rookie injured his left knee in his team’s 26-19 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, with two games left this season. It’s the third injury Nolen has picked up since joining the franchise as the No. 16 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Nolen wrote on Instagram Monday. “… go from never missing games to not even being able to play a half a season … The lord has my path already written and this is just a bump in the road that he has put in front of me to overcome like all other battles he has tested me with.”

It’s another tough blow for Nolen, who had impressed when healthy behind two sacks, five tackles for loss, five QB hits, two passes defensed and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Injuries, however, stunted his rookie season to just six games played.

After working his way back from a calf injury suffered in the offseason, Nolen made his NFL debut in Arizona’s Monday Night Football win over the Dallas Cowboys.

He’d log two more full games of work before a knee injury in the Cardinals’ overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars put him back on the shelf for two more weeks before returning to action against Houston in Week 15.

Now with the latest news, it’s unclear when Nolen will make it back on the field in 2026.

Arizona’s defensive line could look a whole lot different by the time he comes back, too.

While starters Dalvin Tomlinson and Darius Robinson are expected to return next year, plus rotational piece Dante Stills, Calais Campbell could be hanging it up for good after this season.

Add in the potential of Nolen missing time next year, and Arizona’s defensive line suddenly needs some work.

Cardinals move into top 5 in NFL Draft order after Sunday’s loss

A Cardinals loss on Sunday paired with wins from both the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots moved Arizona up one slot to fifth in the NFL Draft order with two games to play.

The Cardinals and Titans are two of four teams with a 3-12 record through Week 16, and strength of schedule is the tiebreaker.

That’s where New England’s Sunday Night Football victory over the Baltimore Ravens came into the picture, as that result improved Tennessee’s strength of schedule.

Arizona and Tennessee have the same opposing win percentage at .575. Their respective final two opponents also have the same records, so the SOS tiebreaker could be fluid over the next two weeks.

Even Monday Night Football could flip them, as a 49ers win over the Colts would drop Arizona back to sixth while an Indianapolis win would improve Tennessee’s strength of schedule.

The Athletic’s draft order model gave the Cardinals a 73% chance to finish with a top five pick after Sunday’s games.

The Cardinals lost 26-19 against the Atlanta Falcons, their seventh consecutive loss and 12th in the past 13 games. Arizona led 13-3 before the Falcons outscored the Cardinals 23-6 for the rest of the game.

Arizona visits the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams to end the season, a lame duck first game and possibly relevant finale, as the Rams jockey for playoff positioning in a juggernaut NFC.

This is a big week for the draft order, as the New York Giants visit the Las Vegas Raiders in a loser-likely-earns-the-top-pick showdown.

The Cleveland Browns host the Pittsburgh Steelers after playing the Buffalo Bills tough on Sunday (23-20 loss). Pittsburgh can win the AFC North with a victory.

The New York Jets have gotten blasted by 20-plus for three straight games and have the Patriots and Bills left on the schedule, so there’s not many reasons to expect much help there.

And the Titans have won two of their last three games and play the suddenly-frisky New Orleans Saints at home this week.

The Cardinals’ path to the top three appears to be to lose out and hope for a Browns win and either the Raiders or Giants to end the year with a couple garbage-time wins over non-playoff teams.

What does the latest mock draft say?

Pro Football Focus released a new mock draft on Monday, projecting the Cardinals go with offensive tackle Spencer Fano out of Utah with the No. 5 pick. Quarterbacks Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore flew off the board with the top two picks.

Quarterback remains a huge question mark for the Cardinals, but they don’t get the opportunity to address it in this mock draft. Instead, they focus on finding a partner for left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and go with Utah’s Spencer Fano, who earned an 83.7 PFF pass-blocking grade on true pass sets and PFF run-blocking grades above 75.0 on both zone and gap runs.

Arizona holds at No. 1, Michigan gains ground atop college basketball rankings

Arizona is still No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll, but No. 2 Michigan is closing the gap.

The Wildcats topped the poll for the third straight week in the AP Top 25 released on Monday, receiving 38 first-place votes from a 58-person panel. The Wolverines had 19 first-place votes — four more than last week — and closed the gap in total points, pulling within 20.

No. 3 Iowa State had one first-place vote, with UConn and Purdue rounding out the top five in the final poll of the calendar year. The next Top 25 will be released Jan. 5.

Arizona (11-0) added another quality win to its resume last week, blowing out San Diego State 68-45 with a dominant defensive performance. The Wildcats also routed Abilene Christian 92-62 last week.

Arizona has won its last six games by at least 20 points, its longest streak since another six-game rout run in 1942-43.

Michigan (11-0) had one game last week, also a blowout. The 102-50 win over LaSalle was the fifth time in six games the Wolverines scored at least 100 points and the eighth straight win by 15 points or more.

No. 13 Nebraska continued its rise, climbing two places for its highest ranking since reaching No. 11 in 1991-92.

Rising and falling

No. 15 Texas Tech made the largest move up the poll, rising four spots after rallying from a 17-point deficit to beat Duke 82-81, ending the Blue Devils’ unbeaten start to the season. Duke dropped three places to No. 6 after its loss to Texas Tech.

No. 16 Louisville had the biggest fall in this week’s poll, losing five spots after losing Tennessee and blowing out Montana. No. 18 Arkansas lost four places following a 94-85 loss to Houston.

In and out

No. 24 USC is ranked for the second time this season following lopsided wins over UTSA and UC Santa Cruz. No. 25 Iowa (10-2) is ranked for the first time since early in the 2022-23 season with its best start since 2020.

Auburn dropped out from No. 21 after being blown out by Purdue, the Tigers’ third loss in five games. St. John’s fell out from No. 22 following a 78-66 loss to Kentucky.

Conference watch

The Big Ten Conference leads with seven ranked teams after USC and Iowa moved into the poll. The Southeastern Conference dropped to six ranked teams after Auburn fell out, matching the Big 12, which has four teams in the top 10.

The Atlantic Coast Conference has four ranked teams, with the Big East and West Coast Conference notching one each.

Marvin Harrison Jr. active for Cardinals-Falcons

GLENDALE — Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is officially active for his team’s home finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

The wide receiver said Friday he was “good enough to go” after missing the past two games with a heel issue. He was listed as questionable heading into the weekend.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the plan is to ease Harrison back into the mix alongside Michael Wilson and Trey McBride.

“Just (want to) continue to get better,” Harrison said Friday. “Just put good things on tape and help the team as much as I can.
