D-backs’ Eugenio Suarez completes incredible turnaround with milestone

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez completed his 2024 season turnaround with a milestone that seemed impossible to achieve back in June.

Suarez, right after belting a foul ball to the second deck just left of the pole, crushed a fastball over the line in center field on Sunday, Arizona’s regular season finale against the San Diego Padres.

There was a little something extra in his home run trot, beyond the typical goggles flash and heart-shaped hands at home plate. Several teammates threw their fists in the air, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. jumping up and down.

The veteran blasted his 30th home run of the season, completing his first 30-homer, 100-RBI campaign since 2019 with the Cincinnati Reds.

“After I had that first half that wasn’t — I wasn’t that good — and then be able to have a very good second half and be able to hit 30 homers after that, it’s awesome,” Suarez said postgame. “I got to feel proud of myself, proud of my work and I give a lot of credit on the hitting coaches. They helped me a lot. They support me a lot and that’s something I appreciate.

“Thank you to them, and then to Torey (Lovullo) for believing me, giving me opportunity to play every day, even when I’m not doing good for the team. They believed in me. And that means a lot.”

Suarez led the D-backs with 101 RBIs and finished second with 30 home runs — only trailing Ketel Marte’s 36.

Suarez became the fifth Diamondbacks third baseman (at least 50% of games played at the position) to accomplish the 30-100 feat. The other four are Matt Williams, Mark Reynolds, Eduardo Escobar and Jake Lamb.

The 33-year-old was a candidate to be designated for assignment near the midway point of the season. The D-backs were looking at giving other options playing time, such as Blaze Alexander. Suarez’s OPS dropped to a low point of .575 on June 11, 66 games into his season. He also only hit five home runs to that point and was batting .197.

And he did not get that average back over the .200 line until July 2.

From July 2 onward, Suarez ranked fifth in MLB with 3.8 fWAR, only trailing MVP candidates Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., Shohei Ohtani and Francisco Lindor.

His 24 home runs were third to Judge and Ohtani, and he led the league with 69 RBIs. His OPS at the end of the year sat at a strong .788.

“I can’t say enough good things about Geno,” Lovullo said. “He has walked into this organization and embedded himself into every one of our hearts, and he’s done a great job emotionally staying balanced, helping his teammates emotionally stay balanced and then goes out there and plays the type of baseball that he did. It was a great moment. I was so proud of him, so happy for that accomplishment.

“It was a rough April, a rough May and a rough half of June, but man, he caught a tailwind and never looked back. And we’re in this position now because of him.”

Suarez made adjustments to his pregame routine, including taking higher-intensity reps off the pitcher-mimicking Trajekt machine in the batting cage.

He lowered his strikeout rate from 29.2% at the end of June to 25.8% the rest of the way. The right-handed bat also improved his hard-hit rate by 10 points. Suarez said on Sept. 11 that he was having the best stretch of his career.

Even through the frustration of his first half, Suarez remained a standout teammate in Arizona’s clubhouse as a veteran presence and positive attitude. When Marte made the All-Star team, Suarez gave the loudest cheers.

“I’ve been hitting in front of him or behind him it seems like a lot of this year, so I get a good view of it from the on-deck circle,” Jake McCarthy said. “He’s easygoing. I think, even when you talked about maybe he didn’t get off to the start he wanted to, it seems like he’s very calm, cool, collected and he’s a really good teammate. We have a lot of fun in here, so I’m happy for him. You always like to see good people have success.”

Suarez was excited after the game with his achievement along with the critical win that kept Arizona’s postseason chances alive.

Asked whether it felt sweeter given his first half malaise, he thanked his the club, his teammates, family, God and anyone who spent this season alongside him.

“You do your best and you work hard and they believed in me, and they give me the opportunity to wear this jersey every day,” Suarez said.

Without a guarantee Suarez will play another game for the D-backs — there is a 2025 team option for $15 million — he has done everything to make a decision to retain him easy.

Jared Verse didn't have a sack, but he was dominant again vs. Bears Jared Verse didn't have a sack, but he was dominant again vs. Bears

The box score rarely tells the full story of how a pass rusher performed in a given game.

Exhibit A: Jared Verse against the Bears in Week 4.

He finished the game with four tackles, one quarterback hit and one tackle for a loss, coming up empty in the sack department. Yet, it was one of the better performances by any pass rusher in the NFL all season.

For starters, he had a 1.5 sacks taken away from him because of defensive holding penalties by Kamren Curl and Tre’Davious White on two separate plays within a minute of each other. The first was with Verse rushing over the center as a stand-up linebacker, a unique package deployed by Chris Shula. It wasn’t a quick win by Verse, but he did push Coleman Shelton into Caleb Williams, disrupting the play a bit following a shotgun snap.

The second was a good rush by Verse where he didn’t give up on the play despite being blocked initially, collapsing the pocket and meeting Byron Young at the quarterback for the half-sack.

Had the Rams not been called for penalties on those two plays, Verse would’ve added a sack and a half to his stat line, as well as two more tackles.

Pro Football Focus provided even greater context on Verse’s dominant performance. According to PFF, Verse had a pass-rush win rate of 50%, which means he beat his blocker on half of his pass-rush reps. That number is tied for the best of any player in the NFL so far this season, matching Dexter Lawrence of the Giants.

It’s Verse’s combination of speed and power that make him such an outstanding young player for the Rams. He showed his raw power on this rep where he walked Braxton Jones backwards with a bull rush before ripping through and going to the outside for the pressure.

Next Gen Stats credited Verse with five total pressures in the game, one more than PFF gave him. Even more impressively, four of those pressures came in under 2.5 seconds, so he was getting to the quarterback quickly.

According to Next Gen Stats, those four quick pressures are the most by any rookie so far this season.

This, for example, was one of those four quick pressures. It turned into a 27-yard gain by D’Andre Swift, but Verse nearly got home for the sack before Williams released it.

Through four games, Verse ranks 16th among all NFL defenders with 17 total pressures, only eight off the lead set by Aidan Hutchinson (through three games). When it comes to rookies, his 17 pressures are four more than any other first-year player.

We know Verse can generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but he needs to figure out how to finish plays now – something he’s well aware of.

“It’s play fast, react fast,” Verse said in a recent interview with TheRams.com. “So I’m gonna go as hard as I can, go after it as fast as I can, I’m not gonna slow down, but that split second before I make contact with the person, I have to slow down, I have to level my feet out, get my two feet in the ground, slow myself down a little bit and be like, ‘Okay, what levels do I have on him? Do I have his back hip? Let me aim for his back hip.’ Like, what do I have?”

After missing three more tackles against the Bears, Verse now has 11 on the year. That’s the most in the NFL, and at least a few of them could’ve resulted in sacks.

He’s still the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year, but Verse hasn’t come close to reaching his ceiling from a production standpoint.

Calm Bolts unfazed by specter of Kings sweep

Meralco is on the edge of being shown the door in the PBA Governors’ Cup by a familiar enemy who has repeatedly sent them packing in the past. But even with their backs against the wall, the Bolts, 0-2 down, are looking at their elimination game against Barangay Ginebra with an extraordinary sense of calm.

Season finale lineups: Padres continue resting starters, Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen available

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have one more game on the schedule with a chance to clinch a postseason spot, but they will need help elsewhere on Sunday.

At Chase Field, the D-backs face a San Diego Padres team that for a second straight game is resting several starters.

Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arraez, Jake Cronenworth and Jackson Merrill were out of Saturday’s lineup and return to the field on Sunday. Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Jurickson Profar and Kyle Higashioka are out of the lineup.

Arraez is motivated to win the NL Batting title ahead of Shohei Ohtani. He enters with a .314 average compared to Ohtani’s .310.

Former Diamondbacks David Peralta and Nick Ahmed are in the lineup.

Left-hander Martin Perez (4.25 ERA) is starting for San Diego, but knuckleballer Matt Waldron will play a role having been recalled from Triple-A El Paso pregame. Randy Vasquez, who threw six shutout innings on Saturday, was optioned.

Waldron (4.79 ERA) has started three games against the D-backs this season, putting together two quality starts but also a three-inning, seven-run performance.

The Padres are locked into the top Wild Card spot.

Arizona is rolling with Brandon Pfaadt (4.80 ERA) to start, but ace Zac Gallen will be available in relief if needed, manager Torey Lovullo confirmed.

“I’ve talked to him through a couple scenarios, but he we have a lot of good bullets,” Lovullo said. “Everybody’s available. But there’s a couple scenarios. … I’m probably thinking of a later scenario, possibly extra innings.”

Lovullo added Ryne Nelson would “most likely” pitch at some point on Sunday.

The Diamondbacks need a win plus losses by the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves on Sunday to clinch before Monday’s doubleheader between the Mets and Braves.

The Mets are looking to avoid getting swept by the Milwaukee Brewers, while the Braves can sweep the Kansas City Royals.

A D-backs loss and Mets win would end Arizona’s season on Sunday.

“It’s not a winner-take-all, we know that there’s contingencies, but what we can do and what we can control, we got to go out there and play a good baseball game,” Lovullo said. “So what I would say to the guys is this is an emotional time. It’s an emotional game. The unpredictability inside of each day is what makes it great. Embrace it. Go out there, control what you can control and and let it rip.”

Milwaukee is also resting several starters such as William Contreras and Rhys Hoskins, but Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang and Willy Adames remain on top of the batting order.

First pitch is at 12:10 p.m.

Braves-Royals

Former Arizona State Sun Devil Alec Marsh (4.65 ERA) is Kansas City’s starter against Atlanta veteran Charlie Morton (4.08 ERA).

The Royals already clinched their playoff spot and are not starting all of their regulars, namely Salvador Perez. Superstar Bobby Witt Jr., however, is back in the lineup after taking Saturday off. Former D-backs outfielder Tommy Pham is leading off for Kansas City.

Why the Rams should trade for Bryce Young Why the Rams should trade for Bryce Young

Bryce Young, the former first overall pick, could be on the outs in Carolina. He had a rough rookie season compounded by an even worse start to the 2024 NFL season. Upon being benched by the Panthers, Andy Dalton was called into service and balled out against the Raiders last week, cementing Dalton’s place as QB1 and leaving Young in no man’s land.

Young, a native of Pasadena, California, is very familiar with Los Angeles as he starred for LA county powerhouse Mater Dei and was once set to play for USC.

Young needs a fresh start and it should be in the place he called home for the majority of his adolescence. Young should be a Ram.

Now, the Rams should not trade anything higher than a fourth-round pick for him and quite frankly, the Panthers should be happy if someone gives them that. They have no leverage, no bargaining room, no market for their young QB.

Young would fit perfectly in the Rams’ offense as it’s very similar to what he ran at Alabama. The Rams have some of the best offensive minds in the league and for Young, he would be exposed to resources unseen in Carolina.

Sean McVay, Scott Frost, Matthew Stafford, Dave Ragone, Jerry Schuplinski, Rob Calabrese and Nathan Scheelhaase are all either current QBs, former QBs or coach QBs, giving Young the resources to rewrite his career.

Young in LA would be the backup, allowing him to grow in a low-pressure environment with a play caller who understands his needs, should Young ever be called into service. If Stafford plays beyond Young’s rookie deal, he’s a tradeable asset with his value increased by coming from the Rams’ system.

It’s low-risk, high-reward. Young was drafted first overall for a reason. When I watched him in college, I remember seeing him struggle as a true freshman behind Mac Jones. He learned, he grew and then he won a Heisman. Why not have history repeat itself? At least give it a chance.

The best part, the Rams don’t have to make a move immediately. They can wait for the market to get worse for Carolina. Then they can sweep in whenever opportunity calls.

All eyes on Elijah Higgins, Cardinals TEs with Trey McBride out vs. Commanders

TEMPE — The depth behind the Arizona Cardinals’ starting lineup is again getting tested this week with playmaker and tight end Trey McBride ruled out against the Washington Commanders with a concussion.

He marks the second Cardinals starter sidelined for the upcoming contest this week after defensive lineman Justin Jones was lost for the season with a triceps injury suffered last week.

Losing McBride is tough. Entering Week 4, McBride is pacing the team in catches with 14 (21 targets) for 122 yards.

Only Marvin Harrison Jr. has recorded more targets (22) and yards (198) than McBride. He’s yet to find the end zone through the air but did score on a fumble recovery in Week 2.

“Obviously, that hurts us that he may or may not be in the game. But for me, I got all the faith in Elijah (Higgins) and Tip (Reiman)” quarterback Kyler Murray said Wednesday.

With McBride out this weekend, Higgins serves as the most likely candidate to command the majority of the tight end targets against a Washington defense that has been gashed in the passing game to the tune of 291.7 yards per game. That ranks 31st among NFL defenses.

The Commanders, however, haven’t allowed much from a tight ends standpoint. Across three games, Washington has given up nine catches for 74 yards and no touchdowns to opposing tight ends.

That included shutting down Cincinnati Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki, who is second on his team with 14 catches and 156 receiving yards.

Higgins has been praised for his continued transformation from a wide receiver to tight end in Year 2 with the Cardinals.

“I’m completely good with ‘Higgy Bear,’” head coach Jonathan Gannon said Wednesday. “He’s a good player.”

The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder presents another big-bodied target for quarterback Kyler Murray and has already shown off his improved connection with his pass catcher despite limited opportunities in 2024.

In the Cardinals’ Week 2 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Higgins was on the other end of an improbable 18-yard touchdown strike from Murray.

The play had a little bit of everything, from Murray putting defenders on skates to Higgins’ awareness to find open space with his signal caller on the run.

Per Zebra Sports, the touchdown had a completion probability of 24.7%, the second-lowest mark among tight ends at the time.

Higgins also hasn’t dropped a pass, catching all four of his targets for 41 yards and the score.

“He’s a very talented player. He’s in a room that’s really competitive … and he’s competing. He’s very coachable and wants to keep learning,” pass game specialist Spencer Whipple told Arizona Sports back in August.

“There’s a transition from playing receiver your whole life and then going to tight end. He’s grasped hold of that and now he’s just trying to improve on the little details that he can. Technique, fundamentals, always asking questions, wanting to learn more and eager on the practice fields and in the meeting room.”

What about Tip Reiman taking snaps with Trey McBride out?

Through three games into rookie Tip Reiman’s NFL career, the tight end has more starts (one) than targets (zero).

He came in classified as a blocking tight end and he’s been exactly that for Arizona.

Does that change this week with McBride out?

The Cardinals like to operate with multiple tight ends and while Reiman’s target share isn’t expected to jump off the page this week, he could find himself picking up some of the scraps similarly to how Higgins has operated.

Travis Vokolek could be another Cardinals tight end in line for added reps, though much like Reiman, has been used primarily as a blocker.

Video: Week 4 Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings & Tiers (2024)

6 Fantasy Football Lineup Landmines: Start/Sit Advice (Week 3)

Subscribe: YouTube | Spotify | Apple Podcasts | iHeart | Castbox | Amazon Music | Podcast Addict | TuneIn

  • Jordan Mason (RB – SF): Jordan Mason could be a top option this week, as the San Francisco 49ers are expected to lean heavily on the run game. With a favorable game script against a Patriots defense that has allowed a rushing touchdown in every game this season, Mason is poised to take the majority of the backfield touches, giving him a higher ceiling compared to other backs like Breece Hall.
  • Aaron Jones (RB – MIN): Aaron Jones comes into this week with both momentum and a compelling revenge narrative against Green Bay. Averaging an impressive 4.02 yards after contact per rush, Jones is expected to get a significant workload, making him a strong play for fantasy managers. His explosive performance last week, along with his pass-catching abilities, makes him a player to watch closely.
  • Chuba Hubbard (RB – CAR) vs. Najee Harris (RB – PIT): There’s a debate over Chuba Hubbard and Najee Harris this week, with Hubbard’s dual-threat potential in a now-efficient Panthers offense under Andy Dalton. Hubbard’s 21 carries for 114 yards last week make him a strong RB2 play. On the other side, Najee Harris faces a favorable matchup but comes with concerns about offensive line injuries and his limited big-play ability.

Arizona basketball Big 12 schedules revealed for 2024-25

The Arizona men’s basketball team got Caleb Love, its star player from the 2023-24 season, to return. Now it enters a more competitive Big 12 Conference known for its basketball roster of 16 teams, and the Wildcats aren’t the lone powerhouse any longer.

The Big 12 released its conference schedules for men’s and women’s basketball Thursday, and the feature of it is Arizona’s visit to face the Kansas Jayhawks on March 8.

That’s the highlight of an 18-game schedule for a league that added Arizona, ASU, Utah and Colorado.

The Wildcats notably return last year’s leading-scorer, Love, along with point guard Jaden Bradley and wing K.J. Lewis.

Love averaged 18 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in his first year at Arizona. He tested the draft waters but ultimately opted to return.

Love does so alongside Bradley, a shifty point guard who came off the bench last year and ultimately proved more consistent than departed point guard Kylan Boswell. Lewis also briefly considered going pro based on a strong freshman season where he gained head coach Tommy Lloyd’s trust playing off the bench by making good decisions on offense and playing effortful defense.

Lloyd’s team lost last year’s starting forwards, Pelle Larsson and Keshad Johnson, to the NBA. Boswell and starting center Oumar Ballo transferred.

Arizona reloaded on the wings with transfers Trey Townsend (Oakland) and Tobe Awaka (Tennessee), plus McDonald’s All-American freshman Carter Bryant.

Reserve centers Motiejus Krivas and Henri Veesaar have a path to contribute at center along with four-star recruit Emmanuel Stephen.

Arizona State’s Big 12 basketball schedules drop

Arizona State men’s basketball will enter its first season in the Big 12 Conference with arguably the most talent head coach Bobby Hurley has had at ASU, much better-equipped to deal with the grind of the tough conference.

In terms of big-time men’s basketball matchups for fans near Tempe, the Sun Devils get Desert Financial Arena home games against Baylor, Houston and Texas Tech.

ASU notably does not get to host the blueblood of the Big 12, Kansas, though the Sun Devils visit Lawrence on Jan. 8.

The Sun Devils have had to get used to roster overhauls on a year-to-year basis, but this one comes with some impressive freshmen Hurley has rarely been able to acquire.

Center Jayden Quaintance, who just turned 17 years old in July, is a top-10 prospect in the incoming class and was previously committed to Kentucky before coach John Calipari left for Arkansas. Guard Joson Sanon is a top-25 freshman and top-five shooting guard in the class. He was previously committed to Arizona before Caleb Love returned to school after testing NBA waters.

Both are expected to contribute immediately with the chance to start. Freshman wing Amier Ali could contribute off the bench with solid shot-making at a 6-foot-8 frame.

ASU returns just two players from the 2023-24 rotation in guard Adam Miller and center Shawn Phillips Jr. Brycen Long and Bobby Hurley also return.

Several potential impact transfers were brought in, including Basheer Jihad (Ball State), BJ Freeman (UW-Milwaukee), Alston Mason (Missouri State) and Brandon Gardner (USC). Hurley has said he thinks the transfers’ games could translate immediately from lower levels to the more grueling demands of the Big 12.

Finally, point guard Austin Nunez returns to Tempe following a one-year stint at Ole Miss. He was a freshman Sun Devil in 2022-23.
