Arizona State’s Big 12 basketball schedules drop

Arizona State men’s basketball will enter its first season in the Big 12 Conference with arguably the most talent head coach Bobby Hurley has had at ASU, much better-equipped to deal with the grind of the tough conference.

In terms of big-time men’s basketball matchups for fans near Tempe, the Sun Devils get Desert Financial Arena home games against Baylor, Houston and Texas Tech.

ASU notably does not get to host the blueblood of the Big 12, Kansas, though the Sun Devils visit Lawrence on Jan. 8.

The Sun Devils have had to get used to roster overhauls on a year-to-year basis, but this one comes with some impressive freshmen Hurley has rarely been able to acquire.

Center Jayden Quaintance, who just turned 17 years old in July, is a top-10 prospect in the incoming class and was previously committed to Kentucky before coach John Calipari left for Arkansas. Guard Joson Sanon is a top-25 freshman and top-five shooting guard in the class. He was previously committed to Arizona before Caleb Love returned to school after testing NBA waters.

Both are expected to contribute immediately with the chance to start. Freshman wing Amier Ali could contribute off the bench with solid shot-making at a 6-foot-8 frame.

ASU returns just two players from the 2023-24 rotation in guard Adam Miller and center Shawn Phillips Jr. Brycen Long and Bobby Hurley also return.

Several potential impact transfers were brought in, including Basheer Jihad (Ball State), BJ Freeman (UW-Milwaukee), Alston Mason (Missouri State) and Brandon Gardner (USC). Hurley has said he thinks the transfers’ games could translate immediately from lower levels to the more grueling demands of the Big 12.

Finally, point guard Austin Nunez returns to Tempe following a one-year stint at Ole Miss. He was a freshman Sun Devil in 2022-23.
