Well, that didn’t take long.
After just two weeks of regular-season football, Jared Verse has already emerged as the top defensive rookie in the NFL in the eyes of oddsmakers.
According to BetMGM, Verse is now the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. He’s far from a lock, of course, but his odds have moved significantly after a strong start to the season. He’s gone from the third favorite at +1000 ($100 wins $1,000) to now being the solo favorite at +300 ($100 wins $300).
At the end of August, he was behind co-favorites Laiatu Latu and Dallas Turner, who were +400 to win the award. Now, Latu is fourth at +1000 and Turner is second at +500.
Through two games, Verse has one sack, 11 tackles, four tackles for a loss and two QB hits. He also forced a fumble against the Cardinals last week, adding to his already-stuffed stat sheet.
Among all defensive rookies, Verse has the second-best overall grade at PFF (78.7) and his nine total pressures are three more than any other first-year player. Murphy has six, Marshawn Kneeland has five and the Rams’ own Braden Fiske has four, ranking fourth among all rookies.
Verse has looked like a future star in the early part of his NFL career already, which is why his odds have shortened after only two games. His combination of speed and power is deadly, allowing him to have a big impact as a pass rusher and run defender.
Awards often come down to stats so Verse will need to keep racking up the sacks, but he’s out to an early lead for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
