The Athletic lists Diamondbacks-Yankees Game 7 of 2001 World Series as best MLB game of 2000s

Game 7 of the 2001 World Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees was listed as the best game of the 2000s, according to The Athletic’s Tim Britton.

Britton noted that Game 7 had plenty of star power in the game, especially when it came to who took the mound for both teams.

I’m not sure how you beat this. You start with the pitching matchup. Roger Clemens won the AL Cy Young Award that season, one of seven he’d win in his career. Curt Schilling finished second in the NL Cy Young voting that year and was arguably the best big-game pitcher of his generation.

Oh, and the pitchers who finished the night on the mound? That would be Randy Johnson, who bested Schilling for one of his five career Cy Young awards and had thrown more than 100 pitches the night before, and Mariano Rivera, the first and only unanimous Hall of Famer.

Game 7 saw a back and forth affair that had the Yankees leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning with Rivera going for the save and New York’s fourth straight World Series title.

After a Mark Grace single and a Rivera throwing error on a Damian Miller bunt attempt to start the inning, shortstop Tony Womack faced Rivera with one out and two runners on and hit a double into right field to tie the game at 2-2.

Two batters later, Luis Gonzalez etched his name in Arizona sports history with a walk-off bloop single over a pulled-in infield to win the series.

With the win, the Diamondbacks became the fastest expansion franchise in MLB history to win a World Series. The win also marked the first and only title to date for Arizona in the big 4 sport leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL).

Game 5 between Diamondbacks, Yankees also appears on list

Game 5 of the 2001 World Series between the Diamondbacks and Yankees was listed as the 15th best game in the 2000s.

After the Yankees won Game 4 courtesy of a walk-off home run by Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter in extra innings, Game 5 at Yankee Stadium turned into another classic.

With the Diamondbacks leading 3-1 headed into the 9th inning, closer Byung-Hyun Kim entered the bottom of the ninth inning to close out the game, one night removed from Kim giving up a two-run, two-out game-tying home run to Yankees first baseman Tino Martinez.

With two outs and one runner on, Yankees third baseman Scott Brosius would hit a two-run, two-out home run to tie the game at 3-3.

Second baseman Alfonso Soriano would later hit a walk-off single in the 12th inning to win the game and give the Yankees a 3-2 series lead after New York had trailed the series 2-0.

Britton added that New York’s win in Game 5 was another indication of how dominant the Yankees were during this time.

Nearly a quarter-century later, it’s hard to overstate how difficult it felt to beat this version of the Yankees, especially in the Bronx. New York had won three straight World Series and four of the previous five. The roster was deep, buoyed by established October heroes and the much-ballyhooed “mystique and aura” of the old Yankee Stadium — which never felt more resonant than in this Game 5.

And so when Scott Brosius lofted another game-tying, two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning off Kim, Joe Buck’s call — “It borders on the surreal” — felt entirely appropriate. Soriano won it with a single three innings later. The Yankees felt unkillable.

Josh Sweat is Cardinals’ best offseason move, per The Athletic

The Arizona Cardinals’ signing of outside linebacker Josh Sweat was listed as the best move the team made this offseason, according to The Athletic’s Mike Sando.

Sando noted signing Sweat addressed one of the team’s biggest needs headed into 2025. The Cardinals have not had a player with double-digit sacks in a season since J.J. Watt’s 12.5 sacks in 2022.

Adding Sweat in free agency addressed Arizona’s massive need for proven pass-rush help. Sweat’s 43 sacks for Philadelphia since 2019 dwarf the totals for any Cardinal over that span. Arizona’s most productive pass rushers since then — Chandler Jones (30.5 sacks), Dennis Gardeck (17), Markus Golden (16.5), Haason Reddick (13.5) and Watt (13.5) are long gone from the roster, save for Gardeck.

The Cardinals registered 41 sacks in 2024, which ranked 13th in the NFL despite no player on the team having more than outside linebacker Zaven Collins’ five sacks.

Sweat is coming off a season with the Philadelphia Eagles where he registered 41 tackles and eight sacks. Sweat had an impressive showing in the playoffs, registering 10 total tackles, including 2.5 sacks in a 40-22 Super Bowl win against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sando added Sweat’s previous connections with the Cardinals coaching staff as another reason for naming Sweat as the Cardinals best offseason move. Sweat previously played under then-Eagles defensive coordinator and Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon and Cardinals defensive coordinator and then-Eagles linebackers coach Nick Rallis for two seasons (2021-22).

Sweat carries risk with a knee that requires management, but his history with the Cardinals’ coaches assures a solid fit.

Under Gannon and Rallis, Sweat made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and had a career-high 48 tackles and 11 sacks in 2022.

Josh Sweat key move during Cardinals offseason

Signing Sweat was one of the key moves during an offseason that saw the Cardinals spend heavily on defensive line help in free agency, while supplementing those additions by way of the NFL Draft.

In addition to signing Sweat, the Cardinals signed defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson to a two-year contract and brought back Calais Campbell on a one-year deal.

Arizona also added Ole Miss defensive lineman Walter Nolen and Oregon EDGE Jordan Bruch through the draft.

Jalen Thompson believes Cardinals will be a defensive-led team in 2025

The Arizona Cardinals pushed nearly all their chips into the defensive front this offseason with multiple big-name free agent signings, as well as devoting all but one of their draft picks to the defensive side of the ball.

Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson believes the identity of the team starts there.

“This is going to be a defensive-lead team,” Thompson said on Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Thursday. “We were in a lot of games last year with the defense, and we could have won more games if we had a little more. This year should be a little different.

“We have some new guys on the defensive line, and in the DBs room that are all ready to go. They’re intentional, they come to practice, they’re consistent. I think that should be really good for us.”

The Cardinals’ biggest additions to the defensive front include Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell. And much like Thompson’s underdog mentality, the unit feels poised to prove naysayers wrong behind the creative defensive mind of coordinator Nick Rallis.

“I feel like the play calling and him just being a leader as a coach has evolved,” Thompson said. “I feel like he is growing as well. He is a young coach, and we are all growing together. There are going to be opportunities out there for the coaching staff, for defensive players, for the whole team.”

Jalen Thompson and the Cardinals’ high standard at DB

The defensive front wasn’t the only part of the unit upgraded this offseason, with the Cardinals bringing in rookie cornerbacks Will Johnson and Denzel Burke.

For Thompson, it’s all about bringing along the young guys and living up to the high standard that Gannon, who cut his teeth as a defensive backs coach early on in his NFL career, has for the secondary.

“We feel like we are the best group in the building,” Thompson said. “We have to hold ourselves to that standard. That is how we are going to win some games this year, by putting the team on our back and going out there and making some plays.”

Arizona will miss Utah, Oklahoma State, Kansas, West Virginia and UCF. It will take on Kansas State in nonconference play, as the matchup was scheduled before the two programs became conference foes.

Head coach Brent Brennan is in his second year leading the program and has made notable changes to his staff after a disappointing 4-8 campaign.

Seth Doege takes over as the offensive play-caller, and Danny Gonzales has shifted from special teams to defensive coordinator.

One area of continuity will be at quarterback with Noah Fifita returning for a third season.

Ketel Marte talks to his bats — and he says a bat talked back

Sometime in May, Ketel Marte stuck his head out of the dugout and was caught on camera having a lengthy, impassioned conversation. It was with his bat.

There was finger tapping to get the bat’s attention and pointing, as if to explain that he needed the bat to send a ball deep into left field.

Eye contact was intense. And then came a more heated moment.

MLB’s social team made sure to follow up on the video posted on May 19. And yep, Marte said he indeed was trying to motivate his bat.

“I was just trying to get hot. Get hot and hit a homer,” he said.

Did the bat talk back?

“The next day, yeah, ’cause I had two,” Marte said.

TikTok user @marcelaram08 posted the original video on May 19, saying it was from a Diamondbacks-Mets game. The D-backs played the Mets from May 5-7 and then the Dodgers at home from May 8-11.

Marte recorded a single hit in three games against the Mets but got hot in the Dodgers series, hitting three homers in the first two games of Los Angeles’ visit to Chase Field.

So whatever he said, it appears the strong communication got through.

ESPN’s Pelton: Suns’ Tyus Jones enters free agency with much to prove

Phoenix Suns point guard Tyus Jones enters free agency this offseason with much to prove after a relatively disappointing season.

The 10th-year guard signed a one-year, $3.3 million contract last offseason with the hope he’d have a breakout year and provide stability to the Suns’ point guard position.

ESPN’s Kevin Pelton released his NBA free agent rankings for this offseason and ranked Jones 25th.

Adding Jones on a minimum contract didn’t prove the coup the Suns had hoped for last summer. He produced as expected, shooting 41% on 3-pointers and posting his usual high assist-to-turnover (4.7), yet he couldn’t help Phoenix’s offense deliver on its potential. For all their talent, the Suns were barely better than league average in offensive rating, and Jones started just four games after the All-Star break. He might need to sign another short-term contract to rebuild his value.

Jones underwhelmed, leaving question marks about his future in Phoenix for different reasons. It was expected a strong year with play him out of Phoenix’s range to re-sign him considering their cap restrictions.

Jones went from averaging 12 points, 7.3 assists in 29.3 minutes per game during his one season with Washington in 2023-24 to 10.2 points and 5.3 assists in 26.8 minutes per game for the Suns. His shooting fell off from 49% to 45% overall.

He would eventually go on to lose his starting role to two-way player Collin Gillespie near the end of the season, averaging just 21.5 minutes per game in March, and only 20.0 in April.

Going into his age-29 season, Jones now enters free agency with surprisingly low stock.

Should the Suns bring back Jones, it would need to be on another short-term, team-friendly deal due to their salary cap constraints.

The Suns have several question marks going into this offseason, with Kevin Durant’s and Bradley Beal’s future in question.

Here are 3 finalists as Suns narrow list of coaching candidates

The Phoenix Suns’ list of finalists for their open head-coaching job includes Cleveland assistants Johnnie Bryant and Jordan Ott, as well as Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, reports Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

That list of finalists could grow to four.

Who are the 3 known finalists for the Phoenix Suns’ head-coaching job?

Bryant, the associate head coach for the Cavaliers, has been an assistant for the Utah Jazz (2012-20) and New York Knicks (2021-24) prior to landing on Kenny Atkinson’s staff this season.

Bryant has garnered credit for helping develop Donovan Mitchell in Utah after the two-guard was viewed as a high-ceiling project pick in the draft. Former Knicks forward Julius Randle also gave Bryant a hat tip for his brutally honest assessment about Randle’s leadership.

Ott has gained knowledge from Mike Budenholzer with the Atlanta Hawks (2013-16); Atkinson, Jacque Vaughn and Steve Nash on the Brooklyn Nets (2016-22); and Darvin Ham with the Los Angeles Lakers (2022-24). He should have familiarity with Suns assistant GM Matt Tellem during his run in Brooklyn from 2016-22.

Ott also spent five years as a Michigan State video coordinator, something of note with Phoenix owner Mat Ishbia’s and new general manager Brian Gregory’s ties to the school.

Quinn’s NBA playing experience from 2006-13 is unique among the rest of the reported Suns head-coaching candidates.

He is viewed as the embodiment of “Heat Culture” and Erik Spoelstra’s right-hand man. That means something working under the most accomplished current NBA coach now that Gregg Popovich has stepped aside in San Antonio.

Quinn began his coaching career with Northwestern in 2013-14 and has since been with Miami.

PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: Memorial Tournament (2025)

PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: Memorial Tournament (2025) - Sungjae Im

Scottie Scheffler looks to defend his 2024 title at the Memorial Tournament this week. It’s the latest Signature Event, held at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

It’s affectionately nicknamed “Jack’s Place” due to famous golfer and golf architect, Jack Nicklaus, designing this par 72 alongside Desmond Muirhead in 1974. The 72 golfers who qualified to play in this field will be faced with challenges from tee box to green at Muirfield. A cut line is enforced here, unlike what we’ve seen at a few other Signature Events in 2025.

My PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: Charles Schwab Challenge flopped last week. The lone hit came on J.J. Spaun at $8.4K on DraftKings due to a strong T6 finish. Aaron Rai and Alex Smalley missed the cut, while Thornbjorn Olesen logged a forgettable T46 finish at even par.

I’ve regrouped and have a brand-new PGA DFS Primer for the 2025 Memorial Tournament. Follow me on X at Matt_MacKay_ for more PGA DFS recommendations, plus analysis and free picks during the remainder of the 2025 PGA Tour season.

Muirfield Village Golf Club is a par 72 that runs 7,569 yards. It features mostly doglegged, tree-lined fairways with thick four-inch bluegrass and ryegrass rough to punish errant tee shots.

5,000 square foot Bentgrass greens are undulated and measure over 13 feet via Stimpmeter. The fairways are also Bentgrass, while no new renovations were made during the offseason.

Three of four par 3s are over 200 yards, while all four par 5s are less than 590 yards. Most of the water hazards can be found on the back-nine, although these hazards do begin to come into play towards the end of the front-nine.

Golfers who lack distance or accuracy off-the-tee with their driver are going to have a difficult time going under par at Muirfield this week. Approach shots aren’t as important due to the relatively large size of the Bentgrass greens, although putting becomes critical while dealing with high velocity undulations.

                                                                                                                          Sungjae Im: $8,100

I’ve come around on Sungjae Im since earlier in 2025. He’s well rested after missing the cut at the PGA Championship two weeks ago. The South Korean has three top 25 finishes, including a top five at the Masters, since early April.

Ranked 18th SG: Off-the-Tee, including 10th in driving accuracy. Also 25th SG: Putting, which is why Im is 28th in scoring average and 12th in birdie average. Coming off of a solid T8 finish at the 2024 Memorial Tournament.

At $8.1K, let’s prioritize Im in DraftKings lineups at a nice discounted rate, offering driver accuracy and a strong putting game.

                                                                                                                          Matt Fitzpatrick: $8,000

I’ll stick in this same range and back Matt Fitzpatrick at an $8K salary. The Englishman has back-to-back top 25 finishes entering Muirfield, including a T8 at the PGA Championship.

Fitzpatrick is ranked 11th on approach shots from 200+ yards, 22nd in sand save rate and 69th SG: Off-the-Tee. He’s beginning to improve his game from earlier in 2025, posting back-to-back quality finishes in May.

T5 at Muirfield in 2024 and a T9 in 2023. Let’s back Fitzpatrick and insert him into our DraftKings lineups at an even $8,000.

                                                                                                                          Sepp Straka: $10,500

Somehow, Sepp Straka is going for only $10.5K on FanDuel. The Austrian has two outright wins in 2025, including recently at the Truist Championship in Philadelphia.

Yes, he doesn’t have a ton of distance and power off-the-tee. However, Straka’s specialty is staying accurate tee-to-green, while burying birdie putts with an improved putting stroke.

Ranks fifth in total strokes gained, including second SG: Approach, 28th SG: Putting and 11th in driving accuracy. Also leads the PGA Tour for greens in regulation hit at 72 percent, while sitting second in proximity.

Recent finishes at Muirfield include T16 and a T5 finishes in 2023 and 2024. Let’s grab Straka in a prime bounce-back spot at the Memorial Tournament after missing the cut at Quail Hollow during the PGA Championship.

                                                                                                                          Rickie Fowler: $8,400

Rickie Fowler has been a mainstay at “Jack’s Place”, competing 15 times at Muirfield Village. Among those outings, Fowler has two runner-up finishes and four top 10s, although he did miss the cut at the 2024 Memorial Tournament.

His driver is the best club in the bag. Ranked 66th SG: Off-the-Tee, which includes 21st total driving and 58th in driving accuracy. 66th scrambling and 49th in putts per round is enough for me to bite on Fowler at a cheap $8.4K salary on FanDuel.

He’s trending up in May, with a T15 at the Truist Championship and a T16 at the Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday. Don’t hesitate to plug Fowler into FanDuel DFS lineups at a course he’s navigated well throughout his 16-year PGA Tour career.

CHANDLER — Sam Leavitt gave some insight on Saturday into how Arizona State football’s offense will be different in 2025, having lost Cam Skattebo to the NFL.

“Cam was a great player, that’s my guy. Just was on the phone with him earlier,” Leavitt said after co-hosting a youth camp with Jordyn Tyson at Chandler High. “That’s gonna be an area that we’re gonna have to figure out what to do with it, but we’re just gonna be a different team.

“We’re not gonna run the ball every single time on first and second down, and we’re just going to go in more quick-game stuff and everything to do with that. Obviously, I’m not gonna go into the details, not trying to give no hints to anybody else, but I’m not too worried about it.”

Coach Kenny Dillingham wasn’t shy ahead of spring camp in detailing the adjustments he thought needed to be made, both in Leavitt’s abilities and in structure of the offense.

“Having rhythm, feet and eyes being basically consistent with one another on certain throws,” Dillingham said in February. “When you’re an athletic quarterback your entire life, you’ve kind of played free and that’s really important. You never want to take away somebody’s ability to play point guard and play free. … But I think there’s a balance of being able to play so free and then also have some spots of your game that are very, very, very rhythmic.”

Leavitt took the desired strides in rhythmic areas in spring camp, Dillingham and offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo went on to say.

The results may look similar to how former Dillingham project Bo Nix finished his career at Oregon.

His completion percentage jumped from 61% in his last year at Auburn to 71.9% when he reunited with Dillingham at Oregon, previously his freshman-year coordinator at Auburn. It then jumped to an all-time FBS-best 77.4% his final season without Dillingham.

Much of the reasoning behind the jumps was due to how Oregon structured its offenses, with screens and other quick passes a heavy part of the dynamic.

Arizona State already utilized the screen game more than any other team in the country last season, per PFF, with screens accounting for 24.1% of its pass plays as Leavitt completed 61.7% of his 350 total pass attempts.

Screens appeared to be an even bigger part of the offense in the spring, and there were several instances of running backs lining up out wide to model “Skatt plays” that Skattebo’s versatility opened up.

With one of the nation’s top receivers back and healthy in Tyson, it’s hard to imagine the downfield passing game would be minimized as a result of the emphasis that could be placed on screens. Alabama transfer Jaren Hamilton represents a new vertical threat to nail that down further.

Sam Leavitt’s growth to become a face of Arizona State football

Tyson led the nation in receiving the final eight weeks of the 2024 regular season, and he’s a projected first-round pick along with self-described “best friend” Leavitt in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“A lot (of growth), man. It was his first year playing college football, like the speed, kind of have to catch up a little bit,” Tyson said Saturday of the improvement he’s seen. “As the season went on, you could just see his progression through his preparation and through just being out there. … So he’s just an amazing player. The Arizona Diamondbacks have been swept for the first time season, dropping another close ballgame to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, 4-3.

The D-backs (26-27) have fallen below .500 for the first time since May 7 (5-6), as they have dropped five straight games by a combined six runs.

And yet, they were out-hit in none of these contests and held leads in the sixth inning or later in all five.

Similar to Monday’s 4-3 loss, St. Louis’ game-winning knock bounced off a D-backs defender.

                                                                                                                          • On Friday, center fielder Alek Thomas did not corral a sliding catch in the gap to rob Nolan Arenado of a bases-clearing triple off Zac Gallen.
                                                                                                                          • On Sunday, second baseman Ketel Marte did not collect a sharp one-hopper on a slide, as Victor Scott II delivered the go-ahead single in the seventh inning against Jalen Beeks.

                                                                                                                          Diamondbacks had chance late

The Diamondbacks had more opportunities for late magic.

Phil Maton entered the ninth inning to close it out, as Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley had pitched in the previous two games. Alek Thomas led off the inning with a double away from the shift down the third-base line.

Geraldo Perdomo squared around to bunt but was hit by a pitch instead, setting up the top of the lineup with two on and nobody out.

Corbin Carroll struck out in an 0-for-5 performance — as he went 3-for-22 on the six-game road trip. Marte popped out to foul ground, as Arenado sacrificed his body by crashing into the netting and landing hard on the seats to make the catch. Marte is 2-for-23 this year with runners in scoring position.

Arenado falling into the netting meant the two base runners advanced 90 feet for Lourdes Gurriel Jr. A single would have put the D-backs ahead.

Instead, Gurriel struck out to end a “frustrating” series.

The D-backs left runners on second and third in the ninth inning in back-to-back games. They out-hit the Cardinals 30-20 in the series but finished 6-for-26 with runners in scoring position (.231).

Brandon Pfaadt bends but doesn’t break

This game was a back-and-forth affair from the first inning.

The D-backs jumped ahead with two runs in the first, as Eugenio Suarez poked a two-run single to right field after a Josh Naylor double off Sonny Gray. Arizona had not scored a first-inning run since Monday — last year, the D-backs led MLB with 124 runs in the first inning, but this year they rank 14th.

The Cardinals responded against D-backs starter Brandon Pfaadt, scoring a run in the first and third innings to even the score.

Arizona ran ahead in the sixth after a Suarez double — his third hit of the game — and a Pavin Smith RBI single, but the lead did not last long.

Pfaadt came one out shy of another quality start in a performance in which he bent without breaking. He finished with 5.2 innings and three earned runs on five hits. He only walked one batter, but it was costly, as Cardinals shortstop Maysn Winn drew a lead-off walk in the sixth inning and scored the game-tying run, 3-3. Winn hit a solo shot off Pfaadt in his previous at-bat.

The Cardinals hit Pfaadt pretty hard with an average exit velocity of 99.7 mph. This is the first time all season in which Pfaadt did not earn a decision, as he entered Sunday 7-3 in 10 outings.

This road trip started with a sense of optimism.

The Diamondbacks defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 on Monday at Chavez Ravine, winning their fifth of seven games and jumping to 26-22.

They were right there in every contest since and come home having to feel like they let most of, if not all of, these games slip away.

                                                                                                                          Diamondbacks’ next series

The Diamondbacks head back to Chase Field to start a six-game homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates (19-35) and Washington Nationals (24-29), two of the four worst teams in the National League by record.

The D-backs have played nine of their last 12 games on the road.

They begin a three-game set with the Pirates on Monday at 6:40 p.m. with Ryne Nelson matching up against Pittsburgh left-hander Andrew Heaney. The D-backs will face Pirates ace Paul Skenes on Wednesday.

Catch the game on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.

The Arizona Diamondbacks scored four runs in the eighth inning, but the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for two runs to secure a 6-5 win on Saturday.

With the loss, the Diamondbacks (26-26) dropped their fourth game in a row and dropped to .500 for the first time since April 12.

After the Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead, Ketel Marte doubled to start off the eighth inning and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. later hit a sac-fly to score Marte to make it 4-2.

Following a Eugenio Suarez single, Josh Naylor hit a line drive that got past right fielder Jordan Walker that scored two runs to tie the game.

Randal Grichuk later hit a fly ball that dropped in center field between Brendon Donovan and Victor Scott II that scored Naylor to give the Diamondbacks a 6-5 lead.

Righty reliever Justin Martinez made his first appearance since April 30 after being placed on the injured list with right shoulder fatigue.

After Nolan Arenado hit a fielders choice RBI to tie the game, Walker drove in a run to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.

Martinez finished his appearance with two runs on two hits, while striking out two and walking one.

After getting two runners on with one out, Gurriel hit a ball that Arenado made a diving stop to throw him out at first.

With two outs and runners on second and third, closer Ryan Helsley strike out Suarez to end the ballgame.

Marvin Harrison Jr.’s connectivity with Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray left room for improvement. The numbers were shrug-worthy for a receiver taken in the top five picks of an NFL Draft.

It’s not all bad, even if it was relatively underwhelming.

Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema used “advanced data, film evaluation and scheme analysis” to rank the top 32 receivers in the NFL looking ahead to the 2025 season, and while Harrison comes in at No. 26 overall and the fifth group of tiers Sikkema created, there is reason for optimism.

Harrison Jr.’s rookie season may have felt underwhelming at times, but it was far from poor. He earned a 77.2 receiving grade overall and a 91.8 grade against single coverage, highlighting his ability to win one-on-one matchups as a true No. 1 receiver.

Harrison finished his rookie year with 885 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

His touchdown total flashed his one-on-one potential, ranking tied for 12th in the NFL at his position. His 14.2 yards per reception ranked 22nd as well.

The rookie-year numbers reflected that Harrison and Murray can get more in tune with one another. According to PFF, his 114 targets included 45 “uncatchable targets,” which led the NFL.

The Ohio State product told reporters this week that he’s added muscle and put in offseason work with Murray to take those next steps. Harrison spoke of his urgency to help the team improve by getting better himself.

“I think we got to make the playoffs,” the receiver said. “We have all the pieces we need. We just got to go out there and execute at this point, and that’s why they brought me here, to help this team win games.”

D-backs’ Hall: ‘Utah Pika’ comment from Arizona leader was ‘coming from the heart’

When an Arizona business leader spoke of the dreaded possibility that the Diamondbacks could follow the Coyotes out of the Arizona pro sports market for Utah — and take an obscure mascot as a name — he was expressing his emotional worry more than reality.

Arizona Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Danny Seiden doesn’t want the D-backs becoming the “Utah Pika,” a reference to a North American rodent.

As Seiden said Wednesday, leading into his more viral comment, local leaders — and the Diamondbacks themselves — believe a bill proposal that would help fund renovations to Chase Field in downtown Phoenix is close to passing in the Senate.

“I do believe we’re on their 5-yard line,” D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall reaffirmed Thursday when he visited Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta. “So, you know, I’m still very hopeful. I think things are going well. There are some people that have tried to make it more complicated, have tried to get in between the flow and the momentum we’ve had, but that’s OK.

“There’s too many people that want to make this happen and they understand the importance of it. And when someone like Danny Seiden goes public with such a statement, I think obviously it’s just coming from the heart. It’s a fresh wound when we lost our hockey team. No one wants to lose another team. There has not been a threat of that.”

Seiden made headlines Tuesday when he pointed out that legislation in Utah and Oregon to fund MLB teams in those locations has passed.

He, too, said he thought people pushing back against the tax recapture plan, including Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, were coming around to approving it as the D-backs look for a resolution as their lease to the Maricopa County-owned ballpark ends in 2027.

But Seiden made sure to paint the picture of a worst-case scenario:

“If we’re not careful, we’re going to see that the Arizona Diamondbacks become the Utah Pika or whatever awful animal they change it to,” Seiden said Wednesday when he joined KTAR News 92.3’s The Mike Broomhead Show. “They took our Coyotes and turned them into the Mastodon Elephants (Utah Mammoth) … I don’t even want to say it. It hurts my heart. Some Utah nonsense. I’m very pro-Arizona here.”

A day later, Hall laughed off Seiden’s emotional quote as frustration about losing the NHL squad more than a temperature check of where the D-backs feel their proposed HB2704 bill stands at present.

“I think he’s just merely pointing to how many markets do want baseball because it’s a point of pride to have your community and the number of jobs you create and what it does for the economy and economic impact,” Hall said. “So that’s really where he was going.

“But obviously, our focus is squarely on getting this deal done, staying right where we are downtown and start to beautify and renovate that stadium that needs it so desperately.”

2-time talks: Steve Nash feels Canadian pride with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP

Watching a fellow Canadian like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander be announced as this season’s NBA MVP left Steve Nash brimming with pride.

And then the moment got better.

Nash — until now, the first and only Canadian player to win the MVP award — was someone that Gilgeous-Alexander identified in his MVP acceptance speech Wednesday night as one of his basketball inspirations.

“It means the world,” Nash, the 2005 and 2006 MVP when he was a member of the Phoenix Suns, said Thursday in a video conference with a small number of reporters. “I don’t need it. And at the same time, there’s no better feeling than watching these guys thrive and them saying you had an impact on them. That makes it all worthwhile and special. And I don’t know if there could be very few compliments higher than that.”

Gilgeous-Alexander — the NBA’s scoring champion — got 71 of a possible 100 first-place votes to win the award, one that he’ll formally receive Thursday night before he and the Oklahoma City Thunder play host to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

He was the best player on the best team, a club that went 68-14 in the regular season and set an NBA record for point differential.

“This is a very special moment for me,” Nash said. “I genuinely get super excited to see his success. He’s really probably my favorite player to watch and let’s hope he continues on this trajectory and continues to rack up seasons like this and represent himself and his country and his team the way he has been. He’s phenomenal.”

Gilgeous-Alexander was just a little kid, 5 or 6 years old, when Nash won his MVP awards. But he was long touted as Canada’s next great one — the basketball version, that is — and now he has officially delivered.

Like Nash, Gilgeous-Alexander is also a cornerstone of Canada’s national program. Gilgeous-Alexander led Canada to a bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup, a finish that qualified the team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and it would seem likely that the 2028 Los Angeles Games are on the Thunder star’s radar as well.

There were 25 Canadian-born players to score in the NBA this season, including seven — Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Shaedon Sharpe, Bennedict Mathurin, Andrew Wiggins and Dillon Brooks — who had more than 1,000 points. No country outside of the U.S. had more 1,000-point scorers than that.

“He set the foundation,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of Nash. “He was the first Canadian basketball player I knew of. And without seeing guys go to the NBA from Canada, it wouldn’t have been as much of a dream as it was for us as kids growing up.”

                                                                                                                          AJ Smith-Shawver (ATL) at WAS

AJ Smith-Shawver is a holdover after yesterday’s game was postponed. He’s the most appealing pitcher on tonight’s small DFS slate, albeit with mixed numbers this season. According to FanGraphs, the 22-year-old righty has an unappealing 4.88 xERA and 10.6 BB% in seven starts spanning 38.2 innings this year. However, he also has a 2.33 ERA, a 3.72 xFIP, 3.98 SIERA, 24.8 K%, 12.4 SwStr% and 29.1 CSW%. Even if Smith-Shawver’s pitching skills are closer to his xFIP and SIERA than his ERA, he’s a decent option in a mid-pack matchup tonight.

The Nationals are 18th in wRC+ (101) with a 20.7 K% versus righties and tied for 13th in wRC+ (108) with a 22.0 K% at home this year. Thus, the Braves are -150, and the game’s total is 8.5 runs.

                                                                                                                          Jack Flaherty (DET) vs. CLE

Jack Flaherty’s 4.44 ERA and 4.63 xERA in nine starts spanning 46.2 innings this season aren’t anything to write home about. However, his 3.33 xFIP, 3.24 SIERA and 28.9 K% are DFS-friendly marks. Flaherty isn’t a safe pick on tonight’s slate, but none of the pitchers have a high floor.

Still, the Guardians are tied for 19th in wRC+ (100) with a 20.6 K% versus righties this year, albeit eighth in wRC+ (106) with a 19.6 K% on the road this season. It’s not a perfect matchup, but Flaherty’s betting info is favorable. Detroit is -135, and the game’s total is 8.0 runs.

                                                                                                                          Suggested Lineup Stacks

Lucas Giolito had a fabulous three-year stretch from 2019 through 2021. Unfortunately, the bottom fell out in 2022 through 2023, and he missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from having an internal brace repair for the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. Giolito has found a new low in his return to the bump. In four starts this year, Giolito has a 7.08 ERA, 5.31 xERA, 4.22 xFIP, 4.22 SIERA and 1.52 WHIP. The veteran righty has yielded a .378 wOBA to 43 lefties and a .366 wOBA to 47 righties as well. Tonight is an eruption spot for the Orioles at hitter-friendly Fenway Park if Mother Nature allows them to play this contest.

The Braves are my favorite fall-back stack if the game at Fenway is washed off the slate. Fortunately, two of the forthcoming players in the core studs and value/punts section are from the Braves, and they have some other intriguing pivots at similar salaries to the Orioles. In nine starts this year, Trevor Williams has an ugly 5.91 ERA. Furthermore, he’s coughed up a .342 wOBA to 256 left-handed batters since last season.

                                                                                                                          Core Studs
