Eugenio Suarez out of D-backs lineup Tuesday after injuring hand

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman and major trade deadline chip Eugenio Suarez was not in the lineup on Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers after being struck in the hand with a pitch the day prior, all two days before the deadline.

Suarez told reporters after the game that X-rays on his right index finger were negative. When he was hit with the pitch in the ninth inning, Suarez was looked at by a trainer and immediately grimaced in pain and flinched when the trainer examined the finger. As manager Torey Lovullo noted postgame, Suarez is not one to do that normally, so it was a scary omen for Arizona.

Suarez also said he was set to have more tests done on Tuesday. The negative X-rays do not necessarily confirm Suarez avoided a major injury that could sent him to the injured list, as the D-backs have seen with other hand injuries this season.

This is the first time Suarez has been out of the D-backs lineup since June 25, when Suarez missed two games after also getting hit on the hand by a pitch.

The third baseman is seen by many as the best player available at the trade deadline, certainly as the only All-Star holding that designation. ESPN ranks Suarez as the top target for the deadline and with good reason. He entered play on Tuesday tied for the league lead in RBIs with 87 and is tied for fourth in homers with 36. With Suarez on an expiring contract, the robust market for him and top prospect Jordan Lawlar waiting in the wings, there is logic to Arizona letting Suarez go despite his desire to stay.

Arizona was not the only team holding its breath at the moment of his injury Monday, as several contenders with a specific need at third base are reported to hold great interest in Suarez.

His OPS of .888 at third base this year sits over 300 points ahead of what the Chicago Cubs have gotten out of the position this year (.574), while other pennant hopefuls like the Milwaukee Brewers (.630), Tigers (.642), Seattle Mariners (.668), Philadelphia Phillies (.678) and New York Mets (.679) would receive a significant boost in production at the hot corner with Suarez as well.

Cardinals sign CB Keni-H Lovely after Starling Thomas V injury

The Arizona Cardinals have added to their cornerback room following the news of season-ending injuries for Starling Thomas V and Jaden Davis, with the signing of Keni-H Lovely.

Lovely joins Steven Gilmore as the two signings over two days to fill the roster spots of those injuries. He had a tryout for the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Lovely went undrafted in 2023 out of Western Michigan and was a part of the Buffalo Bills’ preseason roster the following year in 2024 before getting cut. From there, he went on to play in the United Football League’s (UFL) Michigan Panthers at the start of 2025.

In nine games for Michigan in the UFL, Lovely had 26 tackles and an interception. Across five seasons at the collegiate level for Western Michigan, Lovely picked off six passes with 109 tackles and 10 passes defensed.

Arizona already suffered a season-ending injury at corner with veteran Sean Murphy-Bunting, putting even more reliance on a young group led by third-year pro Garrett Williams, Max Melton in his second season and rookie Will Johnson.

Cardinals sign CB Steven Gilmore, place Starling Thomas V and Jaden Davis on IR

The Arizona Cardinals signed cornerback Steven Gilmore on Sunday with cornerbacks Starling Thomas V and Jaden Davis headed to injured reserve.

Thomas suffered a torn ACL on Day 3 of training camp, while Davis suffered a knee injury on Day 2.

“(Davis is) gonna miss some time but has a possibility to possibly come back,” Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said on Sunday after confirming Thomas would miss the entire season.

“Feel awful and bad for those guys. Obviously talked to both of them. These guys go through a lot and put a lot in, and it’s just a tough break,” Gannon said. “They’ll do everything they can do to get back and both of them will be back at some point, and we’ll move on.”

More on Cardinals signing CB Steven Gilmore

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Gilmore played for the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL this season. He totaled 48 tackles, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble across 11 games. In coverage, he added one interception and 10 passes defensed.

After going undrafted out of Marshall in 2023, Gilmore appeared in three games as a rookie for the Detroit Lions, with 12 of his 14 total snaps coming on special teams, per PFF. He did not make the Lions’ 53-man roster in 2024.

Gilmore played five seasons at Marshall, amassing nine interceptions, 35 passes defensed and 200 tackles over 61 games.

He is the younger brother of former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore.
