Diamondbacks stun Braves with 7-run rally to snatch sweep

The Arizona Diamondbacks trailed 10-4 with one out in the ninth inning on Thursday at the Atlanta Braves and came away with a stunning 11-10 victory to complete a three-game sweep.

Arizona rallied for seven runs on six hits and three walks off Braves relievers Scott Blewett and Raisel Iglesias, as the D-backs turned a 99.9% chance of losing on its head.

Eugenio Suarez delivered the winning runs with a full-count, two-out double into the left-field corner.

The Diamondbacks earned the first victory in franchise history when trailing by six or more runs entering the ninth inning, according to the team. Arizona’s record was previously 0-419.

How the Diamondbacks came back

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. started the surge with a solo blast to cut the deficit to 10-5. Tim Tawa walked, and Alek Thomas crushed a two-run blast to right field.

After Blewett walked catcher Jose Herrera on four pitches, the Braves called on their closer, Iglesias.

Corbin Carroll fell behind 0-2, but he dug out a low changeup and doubled to center field, bringing the tying run to the plate. Ketel Marte singled home another run.

Then the ninth inning got wonky. Geraldo Perdomo popped up for the second out, bringing the clean-up spot up. Josh Naylor started the game but exited for an undisclosed reason.

Ildemaro Vargas replaced Naylor in the lineup, and the D-backs left him in. Pavin Smith had already been pinch-hit for, but the Diamondbacks had Gabriel Moreno and Randal Grichuk available.

Vargas walked up to the plate 0-for-4 this season in the major leagues, but he poked a single up the middle to cut the Braves’ lead to 10-9.

Suarez came back up after leading off the inning with a strikeout, and he roped the game-winning double on a changeup down and in.

The Diamondbacks held on with Shelby Miller picking up the save after Justin Martinez threw 37 pitches on Wednesday.

By sweeping the Braves, Arizona climbed back to .500 at 31-31. Additionally, the D-backs won their season series over Atlanta.

The Diamondbacks overcame a three-inning start from Brandon Pfaadt in which he allowed six runs (five earned), and they improved to 1-7 this year when giving up double-digit runs.

They also improved their record when scoring 10 or more runs to 4-3.

Brandon Pfaadt’s tough stretch continues

Pfaadt entered Thursday coming off a nightmare start in which he allowed eight earned runs without recording an out on Saturday against the Nationals.

His outing at Truist Park started off well, as he sat down the first five batters with two strikeouts.

A two-out walk and a wild pitch cost him in the second, as Alex Verdugo made him pay with an RBI double.

The third inning seemed to be over quickly, as Drake Baldwin hit a tailor-made double play ball to second baseman Marte. Instead of ending the inning, Marte bungled the grounder.

That’s when the wheels fell off for Pfaadt, who allowed four straight hits, including three doubles to break the game open at 6-0. Thomas had a beat on one of the doubles, but he didn’t come up with the catch, as Pfaadt’s defense did him no favors.

Arizona received back-to-back seven-inning starts to open the series with wins from Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly in the wake of losing Corbin Burnes to an elbow injury. Pfaadt was good for at least 5.2 innings in nine of his first 11 starts before his recent slide.

Pfaadt’s ERA was 3.90 going into his previous start. It is now 5.51.

The Diamondbacks called on Tommy Henry for length out of the bullpen in the fourth inning, and he ate four innings with three runs allowed.

Diamondbacks’ next game

The D-backs travel to Cincinnati to start a three-game set at the Reds on Friday at 4:10 p.m. MST.

Eduardo Rodriguez is set to return on Friday, with Ryne Nelson rejoining the rotation on Saturday.

The Reds will start left-hander Nick Lodolo in the opener, followed by right-handers Nick Martinez and Brady Singer.
