Diamondbacks lose resumed contest to Reds in extra innings

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in the 10th inning Saturday after three innings weren’t enough to finish a game that began Friday.

Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand took a pitch from Ryan Thompson into right center field and just out of reach of Alek Thomas to bring home Jake Fraley, who had been stationed at second as the extra-innings runner.

Jalen Beeks had tossed 1.2 innings of no-hit ball on three strikeouts to shut down the Reds. Beeks came in after Juan Morillo’s near-disastrous outing to start the resumption, walking three batters and only garnering one out on a bunt before he was pulled for Beeks in the bottom of the seventh.

Thompson entered the game in the 9th to face the top of the lineup for Cincinnati and picked up where Beeks left off, retiring the top of the Reds lineup 1-2-3 and adding two strike outs. He was not able to sustain through the second inning he was asked to pitch.

A Tim Tawa double in the eighth represented the only hit Arizona got after the resumption. Jose Herrera worked a walk in the 10th before two strikeouts followed and stranded both he and Eugenio Suarez, who started the inning at second.

The disjointed loss broke Arizona’s four-game winning streak.

Diamondbacks’ first full game of day

Arizona will be back out at the Great American Ballpark at 1:10 p.m. MST for first pitch in the first full game of the day.

Ryne Nelson will start for the D-backs while Nick Martinez gets the nod for Cincinnati.
