Fantasy Basketball Trade Advice

Trade For

Ajay Mitchell (PG, SG – OKC)

Ajay Mitchell has become one of the NBA’s most important players in the blink of an eye. Injuries to Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace and Jalen Williams have vaulted Mitchell into the limelight next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He’s made the most of his opportunity so far.

Mitchell has averaged 25.7 points, four assists, 1.7 steals and 41.8 fantasy points per game in his last three outings. His offensive versatility and newfound responsibility offer an untapped fantasy ceiling that teams should pounce on now rather than later.

The current price to acquire Mitchell relative to his average draft position (ADP) just a few weeks ago will be jarring, but it will only rise as the season progresses.

Trae Young (PG – WSH)

Trae Young’s first full campaign in Washington has begun, and the early returns are mixed. The Wizards are 3-3, and Young leads the league in assists while attempting his most free throws yet (9.5 per game). On the flip side, the 28-year-old is shooting just 39% from the field and 26.2% from deep, both career-lows.

The rationale for trading Young has more to do with his inconsistent availability, which has plagued him in two of the last three seasons, and the emerging presence of rookie AJ Dybantsa than anything else.

Washington is a team built from scratch and will slowly try to manufacture an identity as the season rolls on. Can we trust in Young to be the focal point of that identity? Atlanta tried to for the better part of a decade, and we know how that ended.

Young has a fine fantasy floor thanks to his passing ability, but the ceiling is as low as it’s been in years.

Trade For

Zach Edey (C – MEM)

So long as Zach Edey starts and gets more burn than Quinten Post and Isaiah Stewart, he’s an ideal trade-for candidate.

The third-year big man played just 11 games last season and is in his first handful of games since. Edey has averaged 9.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 26 fantasy points per game for his career and has proven to be one of the most impactful young players in the NBA.

While the additions of Post, Stewart, and rookie Cameron Boozer provide legitimate competition, Edey remains integral to the Grizzlies’ success thanks to his overwhelming size on both ends.

With Edey averaging 7.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 22.8 fantasy points per game this season, he could very well be available in your league as a buy-low target.

Trade Away

Jakob Poeltl (C – TOR)

It would not come as a shock to see Jakob Poeltl’s second stint in Toronto come to a close before February’s trade deadline.

The seven-footer has failed to reach the 60-game mark in each of the last three seasons because of recurring back injuries. So far this season, Poeltl is tied for second in the NBA in fouls per game and is having his worst season since 2019.

It’s early, yes, but Poeltl’s days of easy double-doubles appear to be behind him. Perhaps wait things out for a bit to see if he’s able to return to his prior form before shopping him.
