Age isn’t the only number when it comes to Philip Rivers. Just ask Jonathan Gannon

After being on the shelf for the past six seasons, quarterback Philip Rivers is giving it another go.

Signing on with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad this week after Daniel Jones went down with a torn Achilles, Rivers is expected to take over the reins the rest of the way.

And when he does this Sunday, the quarterback will not only be the elder statesman starting at quarterback currently in the game: He’ll be the oldest NFL player across the board in 2025.

As far as head coaches, Rivers has 13 of them beat in the age department, including Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon.

The old gunslinger has a leg up on Gannon — and just about everyone else — in another category, too.

“He is (older than me). A lot more kids than me, too,” Gannon said Wednesday. “If anybody can do it, it’s him. I’d say that.”

Gannon’s not lying there, as Rivers has 10 children to the head coach’s three.

Rivers also has Gannon beat in another department. He recently became a grandfather!

Having kids is one thing. Being able to string together a starting lineup within the household is another.

Jonathan Gannon and Philip Rivers crossed paths

All jokes aside, Gannon knows a thing or two about Rivers from their time together in Indianapolis in 2020.

Gannon was in his final season as the Colts’ defensive backs coach when Rivers came aboard on a one-year deal.

That season, Indianapolis went 11-5 under Rivers before falling to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card round.

From there, Rivers headed for retirement (or so we thought), while Gannon went to Philadelphia, where he took over as defensive coordinator.
