Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman and designated hitter Pavin Smith’s season is over as the team transferred him to the 60-day injured list with a strained left quad on Friday.
The Diamondbacks also announced the team claimed right-handed pitcher Elvin Rodriguez off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and optioned him to Triple-A Reno.
Smith’s 2025 has been plagued by injuries throughout the second half of season. He was placed on the injured list in July with an oblique strain and missed six weeks before returning in August. Smith would play in seven games before being put on the injured list again with a quad strain he suffered in a game on Aug. 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Smith finishes the season slashing .258/.363/.434 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 87 games played.
Rodriguez made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Detroit Tigers and has pitched in 15 career games, posting a 9.40 ERA with 48 strikeouts and a 1.69 WHIP.
The 27-year-old righty pitched in seven games between the Brewers and Orioles this season, posting a 9.15 ERA with 18 strikeouts and a 1.68 WHIP.

Former Red Sox lefty Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound for Arizona, while lefty Payton Tolle will start for Boston. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. MST.
