Another Arizona State football player was given a preseason accolade.
This time it’s quarterback Sam Leavitt who was named to the preseason watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the best quarterback in the nation.
Leavitt was one of 36 players named to the list and one of six sophomores.
The list includes 16 seniors, 14 juniors and eight different quarterbacks from the Big 12.
Leavitt is joined by Rocco Becht (Iowa State), Devon Dampier (Utah), Josh Hoover (TCU), Avery Johnson (Kansas State), Behren Morton (Texas Tech), Sawyer Robertson (Baylor) and Brendan Sorsby (Cincinnati) as the eight Big 12 quarterbacks.

The award committee releases a midseason watch list before announcing the QB Class of 2025 of 35 players on Oct. 28.
The semifinalists will be announced Nov. 12 before the three finalists announced on Nov. 25.
The winner will be announced during the ESPN college football awards show on Dec. 12.

Leavitt was also named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-American team and Maxwell Award preseason watch list.
ESPN named Leavitt as one of the top 100 players in college football, along with ASU teammates Jordyn Tyson and Xavion Alford.
Leavitt was also ranked as a top four quarterback in the 2026 draft class by Field Yates of ESPN.
