Jordyn Tyson dunks over Sam Leavitt in ASU football’s game of knockout at practice

TEMPE — Arizona State brought out a basketball hoop at Monday’s football practice, and it didn’t take long for Jordyn Tyson to throw down a dunk over Sam Leavitt.

The game of knockout, which took place in the middle of practice, pitted one player from each position group for the right to choose music for the rest of the week’s practices.

The defensive backs won, but Tyson’s dunk over Leavitt while Leavitt’s shot was bouncing on the rim was certainly the highlight.

Tyson’s older brother, Jaylon, is a second-year player with the Cleveland Cavaliers, so his hooping experience quite possibly trumps anyone else’s on the team.

With Tyson and Leavitt among the players likely going through their last fall camp at ASU, coach Kenny Dillingham said that was the driving force for the decision to pull out the hoop.

“It goes away. Like, some of y’all have a day and a half left of college camp for the rest of your life. It’ll never happen again,” the coach said after practice. “And even though nobody thinks camp is what they look forward to, you don’t see many miserable people out here. They’re enjoying it.”

Dillingham said the basketball break also gave him a chance to see players “check in and out of emotions.”

“The game is so emotional, and there’s no way to completely remove the emotions from the game,” he said, noting he’s a living example. “I think part of that is just getting our guys to snap from fun and emotional to lock in in 25 seconds.”

Who is Arizona State football’s best hooper?

Tyson and Leavitt are maybe two of the best basketball players on the team, but Dillingham said if he picked one of them, the other would be ticked off.

So the head coach decided to go with an unexpected answer: right guard Kyle Scott.

“If there was a 1-on-1 game, I think he’d be able to back everybody down and win,” Dillingham said. “Maybe (left tackle Josh Atkins) could get in there and (tight end Chamon Metayer) maybe could do both, but I think Kyle would be a tough out.”

Where would Dillingham rank himself among the players?

“I think I’d beat about 40. I think there’s 40 guys that are just so bad at playing offense that I could survive and at least be in it.”
