Big 12 to release injury reports ahead of football, basketball games beginning this season

The Big 12 has joined the other three power conferences in releasing injury reports ahead of in-conference football and basketball games this season, the league announced Wednesday.

For football, reports will be issued daily, beginning three days before gameday with a final update 90 minutes before kickoff. Players will be designated as “available, probable, questionable, doubtful or out.”

Basketball reports for men’s and women’s contests will be posted the night before a game and 90 minutes before tip-off. Their distinctions will be “available, game-time decision or out.”

The Big Ten was the first conference to mandate injury transparency ahead of the 2023 season, with the SEC following suit the next year. The ACC announced it was doing the same earlier this summer.

Kenny Dillingham said last fall he’d be in favor of Big 12 injury reports

Injury reports became a topic of conversation during game week between ASU and Utah in October 2024 because of uncertainty surrounding then-Utah quarterback Cam Rising’s status.

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said at the time he didn’t blame Utah coach Kyle Whittingham for leaving things so vague because there were no rules dictating transparency in place.

“I actually think he’s smart not releasing (information) when your quarterback is in limbo,” Dillingham said on Oct. 9. “I think with the current rules that there are … I think he’s spot on. Why would he not make us prepare for both? He’s absolutely right until they change the rule.”

He said he’d be “100%” in favor of instituting injury reports, as it wouldn’t change much from how forthcoming he already is about injury issues.

The Big 12 will get an early look at how reports are handled ahead of Week 0, when No. 17 Kansas State and No. 22 Iowa State meet in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug. 23 for what will still count as a conference matchup.
