Diamondbacks starting Jalen Beeks on mound vs. Reds, steer away from Nabil Crismatt

After initially having Nabil Crismatt in line to make his second start for the Diamondbacks this season, the team announced left-hander Jalen Beeks will open Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Beeks pocketed all three outs in the 11th inning on Friday before Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a walk-off single to take the first game of the series, 6-5. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo caught a line drive by Reds’ Elly De La Cruz and flipped the ball to third baseman Blaze Alexander for the inning-ending double play.

He only needed nine pitches to earn his second win in his last four starts.

The 5-foot-11 Beeks will make his first start this season after 49 appearances in relief. He has thrown 48.2 innings, 41 strikeouts, 4.07 ERA and one save on May 4 at the Philadelphia Phillies (one inning pitched, two hits, one run).

Though it will be his first start as a D-back, Beeks has made 19 career starts since debuting in 2018 — 18 with the Tampa Bay Rays and one with the Boston Red Sox.

After being reinstated off the injured list on Aug. 1, Beeks has seen action in seven games and has pitched up to 1.2 innings on two occasions. The longest he’s been asked to pitch all season is two innings, which happened in back-to-back outings in early April.

Six Arizona relievers were used on Friday, though only Juan Burgos threw north of 10 pitches (14). If Crismatt is unable to suit up, Jake Woodford and Bryce Jarvis are both options. Woodford last pitched on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies and Jarvis was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Jarvis could be someone the Diamondbacks turn to in this potential series-clincher, as he has thrown 70.1 innings in 17 appearances with the Aces.

The original probable starter Crismatt tossed five innings of one-run ball in his first start with Arizona on Sunday in a 6-5 loss to the Rockies in Colorado.
