ASU outside of AP Top 25 following road win over Iowa State

Arizona State football remained on the outside looking in for the second straight week of The Associated Press’ Top 25 rankings after defeating Iowa State 24-19 in Ames.

After ASU (6-3, 4-2 in Big 12) failed to receive any poll votes last week post a one-score Houston loss, the Sun Devils got four votes.

ASU also was not in the latest Coaches Poll two weeks in a row, this week receiving two votes.

With Jeff Sims now firmly in a starting quarterback roll as Sam Leavitt has to undergo season-ending foot surgery, the Sun Devils will face West Virginia (3-6, 1-5 in Big 12) on Saturday at Mountain America Stadium.

How is Big 12 faring in latest AP poll?

For the first time this season, there are two Big 12 teams featured in the AP poll’s top 10: BYU (No. 8) and Texas Tech (No. 9). During its bye, BYU moved up two spots from a share of 10th with Miami — which is now ranked No. 18 after a loss to SMU — and Texas Tech jumped up four spots after handily beating Kansas State, 43-20.

Utah and Cincinnati practically swapped places, as the former moved up seven spots to No. 17 and the latter fell eight to No. 25. The Utes defeated Cincinnati 45-14 in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

Houston joined ASU as the two teams in the conference not in the top 25 to receive votes with six.

The top seven places in the Week 10 poll didn’t change, as three teams surged up seven spots (Oklahoma, Texas and Utah) and Tennessee plummeted the most spots (nine).
