Just how unlikely was Will Johnson’s 2nd-round fall to Cardinals?

Lloyd Christmas would be proud.

The Arizona Cardinals’ chances of nabbing Michigan cornerback Will Johnson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft weren’t great.

Nearly zero to be exact, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon.

“When we left on Thursday, we had him graded very high,” Gannon told SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio on Wednesday. “In my mind, I was like, ‘There is no chance he’s there when we pick in (Round 2), like none.’ And we get there Friday and (general manager Monti Ossenfort) has all these algorithms that he has all the analytics people run and all this stuff. I said, ‘What are the chances that he’s there in 2?’

“They’re like, ‘Coach, like 0.02%.’ Like no chance. So, when he was sitting there, I’m like, ‘Dude, am I missing something? Like, this is the best corner in the draft!'”

So, you’re telling me there was a chance!

Sure enough, the stars aligned with Johnson linking up with Gannon and the Cardinals at No. 47 overall.

Gannon wasn’t the only one shocked by his availability on Day 2, either.

“You know what’s funny? I’m going to air dirty laundry here, but as the draft’s going on, coaches are texting back and forth — not just our staff, but other staffs, people that you worked with or that you know and you make a pick and certain coaches like certain guys,” Gannon said. “When we picked him, literally like eight defensive coordinators texted me like, ‘Oh my God, No. 1 corner on the board, blah, blah, blah, blah.’ And for whatever reason he came to us.”

The reason behind Will Johnson’s second-round skid

Johnson’s fall down the draft board from projected first-rounder to Day 2 pick centers largely around his injury history.

The cornerback dealt with shoulder and turf toe issues last season that limited him to just six games played.

During the draft process, he was held out of participating at the NFL Scouting Combine due to a hamstring injury. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also mentioned a knee issue.

Johnson, however, has since reiterated that he’s healthy and hasn’t dealt with any knee issues in two years.

Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort doubled down on Johnson’s health status, saying the team felt good with its evaluation of the cornerback.

Aside from the injury concerns, there’s not a lot to knock about Johnson’s game.

Johnson was a pick six waiting to happen at Michigan, taking three of his nine career picks to the house. Two of those came during his injury-riddled final season at Michigan.

He added 10 passes defensed and 68 tackles across 32 career games.

There’s a reason why ESPN’s Field Yates told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Wednesday that Johnson was “a home run” addition based on his draft spot.

NFL fines Falcons, DC Jeff Ulbrich after prank call to Shedeur Sanders

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have been fined $250,000 and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been fined $100,000 as the result of Ulbrich’s son participating in a prank call to Shedeur Sanders during the NFL draft.

The NFL confirmed the fines on Wednesday for the roles by the Falcons and Ulbrich in failing to prevent the disclosure of confidential information distributed to the club in advance of the NFL draft.

The Falcons, who disclosed the role of Ulbrich’s 21-year-old son Jax in the prank call as Sanders was waiting for his name to be called in the draft, said they accept the discipline from the league.

“We appreciate the NFL’s swift and thorough review of last week’s data exposure and the event that transpired due to it,” Atlanta said in a statement.

“We were proactive in addressing the situation internally and cooperated fully with the league throughout the process, and accept the discipline levied to Coach Jeff Ulbrich and the organization. We are confident in our security policies and practices and will continue to emphasize adherence to them with our staff whether on or off premises.”

Atlanta also said the Ulbrich family “is working with the organization to participate in community service initiatives in relation to last week’s matter.”

How did the son of Falcons DC get Shedeur Sanders’ number?

On Sunday, Atlanta said in a statement that Jax Ulbrich “unintentionally came across the draft contact phone number for Shedeur Sanders off an open iPad while visiting his parent’s home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.”

Jax Ulbrich was sitting beside an unidentified friend who actually made the call to Sanders on Friday, the second day of the draft. Sanders, a standout quarterback from Colorado, is the son of Buffaloes coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who began his NFL career with Atlanta.

Sanders, who entered the draft expecting to be a first-round pick, was selected Saturday in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.

Atlanta said Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the prank until after the fact. The team offered “sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family.” Jax Ulbrich also posted a public apology on social media.

The NFL continues to investigate prank calls made to other players during the NFL draft. The Associated Press reported Tuesday the call to Shedeur Sanders wasn’t related to the other prank calls.

Tyler Warren, Kyle McCord, Mason Graham and Chase Lundt also have reported receiving prank calls.

ASU adds 3-star linebacker Oscar Aguilar to 2026 class

ASU football added another defensive piece to its 2026 recruiting class and its first linebacker.

Linebacker Oscar Aguilar announced his commitment to the Sun Devils on Tuesday morning.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder out of Downey High School played on both sides of the ball until focusing on defense this past season.

In 2024, Aguilar contributed to a Downey team that went 9-2 and finished first in the Gateway league at 5-0.

The three-star prospect was second on the team in total tackles (102) and sacks (4.0). His 14 tackles for loss led the Vikings, alongside a team-high five forced fumbles.

Nationally, Aguilar is the 111th-ranked player at his position and the 125th-best in California.

He also received offers from Oregon State, Boise State, Cal and Colorado State.

How ASU’s class of 2026 is shaping up

Aguilar is the fourth defensive player Kenny Dillingham and Co. have gained commitments from for 2026 and joins three-star edge Julian Hugo (committed April 10), four-star cornerback Jalen Williams (committed April 5) and three-star safety Zeth Thues (committed Nov. 2024),

Arizona State is ranked No. 13 in the 2026 recruiting class according to 247 Sports.

PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: The CJ CUP Byron Nelson (2025)

PGA DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: The CJ CUP Byron Nelson (2025) - Rasmus Hojgaard

The PGA Tour returns to its standard stroke-play format ahead of Thursday’s opening round at the 2025 CJ CUP Byron Nelson. 156 golfers will tee it up at TPC Craig Ranch, which is a par 71 that runs over 7,500 yards. We’ll dive into the course layout and hazards momentarily.

I took off writing this article during the Zurich Classic due to its unique team format, so let’s quickly recap my 2025 RBC Heritage DFS Primer. All four of my prospects at the latest Signature Event played well. Brian Harman was the best return on investment with his T3 finish at $7.6K on DraftKings. Patrick Cantlay (T13) and Tom Hoge (T18) carded top 20 finishes, albeit at much different salaries, while Aaron Rai had the worst outing at T38.

I’ve got four prospects worth inserting into DraftKings and FanDuel DFS lineups for the 2025 CJ CUP Byron Nelson. Follow me on X at Matt_MacKay_ for more PGA DFS recommendations. Get analysis and free picks throughout the 2025 PGA Tour season.

                                Course Overview

TPC Craig Ranch is a Tom Weiskopf design that is a par 71, measuring 7,569 yards. It’s a lengthy track with Zoysiagrass fairways, Bermudagrass rough that stands four inches, along with Bentgrass greens that run 11.5 feet via Stimpmeter.

Fairways at TPC Craig Ranch are wide, offering soft targets off-the-tee. Distance is key, with many par 4s exceeding 450 yards and three of four par 3s running north of 200 yards.

There are minimal water hazards but numerous sprawling sand bunkers are located along fairways and the relatively small Bentgrass greens. Winds are forecast to pick up as this event heads into the weekend, which will create another hazard.

Ultimately, golfers with power off-the-tee, the ability to hit greens in regulation with consistency, and finish birdie putts on these Bentgrass greens will be rewarded with low scorecards. Scrambling is less of a factor here this week, while accuracy off-the-tee is also mitigated in favor of distance.

                                Recommended Plays: DraftKings

DraftKings maximum salary is set at $50,000

                                Rasmus Hojgaard: $8,900

Rasmus Hojgaard has no shortage of power off-the-tee. The Denmark native ranks ninth in driving distance, which is a focal point this week at TPC Craig Ranch.

Hojgaard is also 26th on approach shots from 200+ yards and is 46th in birdie average. At under $9,000 on DraftKings, we’re not overpaying for Hojgaard’s power and finishing ability. He’s a solid first addition to DraftKings lineups this week.

                                Jake Knapp: $8,400

Another bomber off-the-tee, Jake Knapp had a lot of success playing at this course in 2024. Knapp turned in a solo eighth finish a year ago and ranks 21st SG: Putting, 34th in driving distance and 12th for birdie average.

Knapp is averaging 68.3 fantasy points per game. He’s logged 15-23 birdies in three of his past five solo events played. A couple of missed cuts is the only reason we’re getting Knapp at under an $8,500 salary, so let’s take advantage of this discounted rate.

                                Victor Perez: $8,400

Victor Perez has played well in 2025 but he did miss the cut in his last solo outing at the Valero Texas Open. Now, we’re getting him at $8,400 salary on FanDuel.

Perez ranks 48th SG: Off-the-Tee, including 57th in total strokes gained. He’s 10th in total driving, blending power and accuracy. The French native is also 43rd at finding greens in regulation at 67 percent.

Ranking 48th on par 4s and 26th in scoring average adds more incentive to invest in Perez for a bounce-back effort at TPC Craig Ranch this week. Let’s grab Perez at $8.4K on FanDuel.

                                Sam Ryder: $8,400

Sam Ryder is still searching for his first top 10 finish this season but I’m bullish on him this week. Ryder ranks 35th total strokes gained, which includes third SG: Putting. This will be a huge advantage at a course like TPC Craig Ranch.

Ryder logged a T14 and T16 in back-to-back events at The Players Championship and Valspar Championship last month. He’s capable of getting hot with his flat stick as we’ve seen throughout his PGA Tour career. He’s 36th on approach shots from 200+ yards, 24th scrambling, 19th in scoring average and 20th in one-putt percentage.

Off-the-Tee is where Ryder has struggled the most this season, ranked 153rd, including 110th in distance. We’ll need him to lean on his irons and short game, which I believe he’ll be able to do with consistency.

He hasn’t missed a cut this season and ranks 29th in total birdies (159). Ryder is a sneaky play at $8,400 on FanDuel, so let’s prioritize him as a value add to DFS lineups at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

ASU nabs Iowa State OL twins Brent and Wade Helton in transfer portal

Arizona State football picked up a pair of offensive line transfers on Monday in Iowa State twins Brent and Wade Helton, Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports reported.

Their additions mark the first for the Sun Devils in the spring transfer portal.

Both brothers redshirted as freshmen in Ames without any snaps in 2024 after coming in as three-star recruits out of Corona Centennial High. Both considered Arizona State in their initial recruitments.

Wade, the older twin by 18 minutes, was the higher-rated prospect at No. 969 overall and No. 72 among offensive tackles, according to the 247 Sports composite ranking. Brent was No. 1,326 overall and No. 110 among inside offensive linemen.

Although Wade has the age advantage over Brent, the younger lineman carries the weight advantage at 6-foot-5, 320 pounds compared to Wade at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds.

How Brent and Wade Helton fit into Arizona State football’s OL room

Offensive line appeared to be the position with the most room for added depth during ASU’s spring camp.

Left tackle Josh Atkins, right guard Kyle Scott and Ben Coleman, who moved from left guard to center, were the starters from last year to man spots again this spring.

Right tackle Max Iheanachor also returns and is a projected 2026 NFL Draft pick, but he missed spring camp with an arm injury that isn’t expected to limit him this fall.

Redshirt sophomore Sean Na’a and senior transfer Jimeto Obigbo (Texas State) split most of the reps at left guard, but the younger Na’a appeared to have the edge at camp’s conclusion.

At the time the Helton twins entered the portal, Alec Busse of Cyclone Alert wrote they had been expected to compete for snaps in the fall with added versatility from learning guard and center.

Kenny Dillingham mentioned “snappers” as an area he wanted to address when the spring portal first opened, so the Heltons may fit the mold.

Behind offensive line coach Saga Tuitele, young players at the position who have developed and impressed behind the starters include Terrell Kim, Champ Westbrooks and Maki Stewart.

5 Fantasy Baseball Prospects to Stash Now (2025)

We’re back for some prospecting in the Minor Leagues. In the last article, we hit on some names for you to get ahead of on the waiver wire, including Nick Kurtz, Chandler Simpson, J.T. Ginn and Chase Meidroth.

Now, with about a month of the Minor League season behind us, we can dig deeper into prospect speculation. Let’s look at five prospects at the top of the speculation market

                                Bubba Chandler (SP – PIT)

We are officially on Bubba Chandler watch. We’ve seen the Pirates build up his innings over five starts. In his latest start, we saw him go five innings, giving up one hit, striking out four and walking none (though he did hit two batters).

In his early starts, it was mainly fastball and slider, but his change-up usage has picked up. His triple-digit fastball looks as good as ever. Everything is lined up for him to get a call to the Majors any time now. He is a must-add waiver wire pickup. If he’s on your wire, get him now before buzz starts to pick up about his call-up.

                                Roman Anthony (OF – BOS)

On April 10th, Roman Anthony was hitting just .176. As of April 27th, he’s hitting .313. It took him a little to adjust, but Anthony is back to putting up a huge exit velocity of 97 miles per hour (MPH) on average and a 113 max, which comes to an over 60% hard-hit percentage at Triple-A.

Cutting down strikeouts is important for the team to see as well. He looks the part of a top overall prospect in baseball right now. His timeline is a bit murky, though. Kristian Campbell hasn’t played great second base. There is a world where Marcelo Mayer gets called up and Campbell goes to the outfield. That would cut off Anthony’s timeline. His hot bat, though, is worth a stash now if the Red Sox are looking to bolster their lineup.

Jordan Lawlar (SS, 2B – ARI)

Besides Nick Kurtz, Jordan Lawlar has been one of the hottest bats in the Minor Leagues to date. He’s sporting a .354 average with five home runs and 11 stolen bases. Though some of his batted ball profile isn’t jumping off the page, the 88% zone contact% is.

That type of contact will create great things in the Diamondbacks’ lineup. Like many prospects right now, where and how Lawlar fits is the question. Ketel Marte is about back, Geraldo Perdomo is their shortstop and Eugenio Suarez is coming off a four-home run game. I’d love to see him take some outfield reps, but Mike Hazen said when he’s ready, he’ll be up no matter what. He looks kind of ready, Mike.

                                Cade Horton (SP – CHC)

Justin Steele‘s season-ending injury created a hole in the Cubs’ rotation. Colin Rea has been solid, as of writing this, but Ben Brown has an over 6.00 ERA. Cade Horton may be the answer with his 1.06 ERA and 35% strikeout rate. He’s been a little walk-heavy, but his fastball is back up to 96, and he’s seeing great results.

Many forget, but Horton was one of the Cubs’ top prospects. Once he gets a look in the rotation, he will be a borderline rotation pickup or streamer. He’s throwing his slider more, so we may see the strikeouts carry over to the Majors.

                                Zebby Matthews (SP – MIN)

The Twins had a spot in their rotation that went to David Festa. He was sent back down once Pablo Lopez returned, and though he could be back up next, Zebby Matthews deserves a long, hard look. His last outing was OK, but he walked a few, and his velocity was down a little.

On the year, Matthews still has a 1.97 ERA, and the four walks in his last start were more than he had thrown the entire Minor League season. Matthews’ fastball had touched the high 90s, so as long as the velo dip isn’t a trend, the Twins should look to not waste many more bullets with him in the Minors. The velo dip could also be a sign that the Major League training staff needs to start caring for his arm. If he’s called up, we want him.

                                Marcelo Mayer (SS – BOS)

Marcelo Mayer is hitting .280, his power is up with seven home runs already and he is playing some shortstop, second base and third base for versatility. Kristian Campbell’s defense may get Mayer on the infield very soon.

                                Moises Ballesteros (C – CHC)

How long can a catcher hit over .400 at Triple-A and not get to the Majors? The Cubs are currently testing this theory. Moises Ballesteros’ bat will make him a must-pickup in two-catcher leagues and a possibility to track like Agustin Ramirez as a 15-team option.

                                Alex Freeland (SS – LAD)

Alex Freeland has been a hitting machine, hitting over .300 in Triple-A. He just hit his second home run to go with six stolen bases, and has incredibly strong hard-hit and exit velocities in the Minors.

Freeland is an injury away from being called up and should be looked at when that happens.

                                Logan Henderson (SP – MIL)

Logan Henderson was great in his taste of the Majors. The Brewers have arm reinforcements coming off the injured list (IL), but will Chad Patrick and Quinn Priester hold him back? Not for too long.

                                Ian Seymour (SP – TB)

The Rays rotation seems locked, and we’ve already seen Joe Boyle get a look, but Ian Seymour has one of the best ERAs, swinging strike rates and K-BB% in Triple-A. We’re keeping a close eye on him to get to the bigs.

By the numbers: Eugenio Suarez’s historic night rarer than a perfect game

PHOENIX — Eugenio Suarez accomplished a feat rarer than a perfect game or an immaculate inning with his four-home run game on Saturday at Chase Field.

Barry Bonds never hit four in one game, nor did Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth or Albert Pujols.

There have been a total of 19 four-home run games in major league history, two of which came before 1900. There have been 24 perfect games and 114 immaculate innings.

It had not been done from 1896 until Lou Gehrig in 1932 in a 20-13 shootout against the Philadelphia Athletics. Fellow baseball and American icon Willie Mays did so in 1961, and the next player was Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt in 1976. Only one player hit four homers in a game during the 1980s, Atlanta’s Bob Horner (Arizona State legend) in 1986.

Most games involving a player hitting four home runs are pretty one-sided, with 11 of the 19 decided by seven or more runs. That was not the case with Suarez, who blasted his final roundtripper off Braves closer Raisel Iglesias to tie Atlanta in the ninth inning.

The Diamondbacks ended up losing in 10 innings 8-7, but Saturday was a moment that will live on in baseball history, and is one of the defining moments of Suarez’s career.

By the numbers: Eugenio Suarez hits four home runs

                                19 players ever

The Diamondbacks have accounted for the last two four-home run games, as J.D. Martinez had himself a day at Dodger Stadium in 2017. Martinez did so only three months after Scooter Gennett clobbered four home runs for the Cincinnati Reds, whose third baseman that day was Suarez.

The list of 19 players goes as follows:

                                – Bobby Lowe, Beaneaters, May 30, 1894
                                – Ed Delahanty, Phillies, July 13, 1896
                                – Lou Gehrig, Yankees, June 3, 1932
                                – Chuck Klein, Phillies, July 10, 1936
                                – Pat Seerey, White Sox, July 18, 1948
                                – Gil Hodges, Dodgers, Aug. 31, 1950
                                – Joe Adcock, Braves, July 31, 1954
                                – Rocky Colavito, Cleveland, June 10, 1959
                                – Willie Mays, Giants, April 30, 1961
                                – Mike Schmidt, Phillies, April 17, 1976
                                – Bob Horner, Braves, July 6, 1986
                                – Mark Whiten, Cardinals, Sept. 7, 1993
                                – Mike Cameron, Mariners, May 2, 2002
                                – Shawn Green, Dodgers, May 23, 2002
                                – Carlos Delgado, Blue Jays, Sept. 25, 2003
                                – Josh Hamilton, Rangers, May 8, 2012
                                – Scooter Gennett, Reds, June 6, 2017
                                – J.D. Martinez, Diamondbacks, Sept. 4, 2017
                                – Eugenio Suárez, Diamondbacks, April 26, 2025

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is the first manager to experience this phenomena twice.

“I was really proud of his last at-bat,” Lovullo said. “Everybody’s wanting him to hit that fourth home run. The normal thing to do is to get lengthy, get long and pop up, get jammed. But he put himself into a good count by taking some nasty pitches just off the plate and then probably put his best swing on the high fastball. It’s amazing. It’s magical. It’s what we all dream about as kids.”

Suarez donated his bat to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Suarez is one of three Diamondbacks in club history to hit at least three home runs in a game multiple times, having done so last year against the Washington Nationals. He joins Luis Gonzalez and Steve Finley on that list, per MLB researcher Sarah Langs.

He is the first player to ever hit four home runs in a game at Chase Field.

10 home runs to climb the leaderboards

Suarez won the first NL Player of the Week award of the season, hitting five home runs in the first five games of the season. His first five hits were homers.

Since then, the bat had cooled off, although Suarez in the last week had shown some signs of heating back up, although nothing close to the extent of Saturday’s performance.

Suarez entered Saturday with six home runs, and he went to bed with a major league high of 10.

His OPS climbed from a substandard .690 to a really good .870, as his slugging percentage skyrocketed from .411 to .564.

He is the first major leaguer in history (minimum 100 plate appearances) to raise his slugging percentage by 150 points in one day, per OptaSTATS.

The next largest jump came from Mike Cameron’s four-homer game in 2002, when his slug rose from .473 to .615.

“Today was a special. Yesterday is in the past. Like I say, we got to turn the page, come here with a new energy,” Suarez said. “I never changed my thoughts, I’m always the guy who believes in what can happen in the game.”

                                34 dingers since last summer

Last season, Suarez hit six home runs through July 6. He hit 24 for the rest of the season.

From July 7, 2024, through Saturday, Suarez has led Major League Baseball with 34 home runs, one ahead of reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge.

                                Mixed feelings

While it is rare to hit four home runs in a game, it is much less common to lose that game. The Diamondbacks are one of three teams to lose a game in which one of their players left the yard four times. The last club to do so was Horner’s Braves in 1986 against the Montreal Expos.

1st Venezuelan to hit a quartet

Suarez is the first major leaguer from Venezuela to hit four home runs in a single game, a country with a rich baseball culture and history. He is also the only Venezuelan-born player to hit three home runs in a game three times.

Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Carlos Gonzalez have done it twice, each.

The only other Latin American-born player to hit four in one game was Carlos Delgado for the 2002 Blue Jays.

Diamondbacks select Scott McGough, option Yilber Diaz

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a series of roster moves to address their bullpen on Sunday.

Those moves include selecting reliever Scott McGough, optioning top-ranked pitching prospect Yilber Diaz to Triple-A Reno and designating reliever J.P. Feyereisen for assignment.

Arizona tweaked the roster after Arizona’s bullpen blew a 6-2 lead on Saturday. The Diamondbacks went on to lose 8-7 in extra innings.

The 35-year-old McGough has made 89 appearances for the Diamondbacks over the past two seasons with a 5.59 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 103 innings but is yet to pitch at the big-league level in 2025.

The reliever was signed to a minor league deal in the offseason after he entered free agency. His $4 million mutual option with the club for 2025 was previously declined.

Over nine games with the Reno Aces in 2025, he holds a 5.23 ERA in 10.1 innings. He has not allowed a home run and has given up three walks with 15 strikeouts.

Feyereisen has pitched in two games for the Diamondbacks this season. In his first appearance, he came in to pitch the ninth inning in a 6-2 loss against the Chicago Cubs on Apri 19. He did not allow a run and gave up one hit.

But in his second appearance, on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays, the right hander surrendered three runs (two earned), including a home run in the 10th inning of a 7-4 loss. Feyereisen was optioned to Reno after Thursday’s game.

Diaz was called up on Thursday and pitched three innings in an 8-2 loss to Atlanta. He allowed three runs on four hits and three walks in his only appearance. The No. 4 prospect on the Diamondbacks’ MLB Pipeline list has also made five starts with the Aces this season, where he holds a 5.82 ERA in 21.2 innings.

The 24-year-old right-hander made his MLB debut last season, when he registered a 3.81 ERA in 28.1 innings.

The Diamondbacks and Braves conclude their three-game series at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday. Brandon Pfaadt will pitch against Atlanta’s Spencer Schwellenbach.

Catch the game on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.

Cardinals trade No. 152 pick in 5th-round of 2025 NFL Draft

The Arizona Cardinals have traded the No. 152 overall pick in fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

In a deal with the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona shipped off its fifth-rounder in exchange for Nos. 174 (fifth round) and 211 (sixth round).

The Cardinals still have their seventh-round pick at No. 225.

The move comes after general manager Monti Ossenfort said he had trade offers for both of the team’s Day 2 picks that resulted in Michigan cornerback Will Johnson and Oregon pass rusher Jordan Burch.

NFL Draft trades nothing new for Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort

Friday’s draft deal marks the latest for Ossenfort since he took over the reins of the franchise in 2023.

He began his draft resume in Arizona behind a first-round trade down with the Houston Texans that netted two first-round picks in return.

Ossenfort then moved back up the draft in a move with the Detroit Lions to nab left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. at No. 6 overall.

The other first-rounder gained in the deal was used last draft on defensive lineman Darius Robinson.

Beyond the first round, Ossenfort has pulled off four other deals across the past two drafts.

They’ve resulted in the additions of pass rusher BJ Ojulari, cornerback Garrett Williams, cornerback Max Melton and tight end Tip Reiman, among others.

“I love it. It’s cool. That’s why we work over a year for that night,” Ossenfort said last week on the chaos behind maneuvering on draft night. “I got a lot of help in there. A lot of guys that have done this a long time and have taken those calls.

“Really, it’s taking in the information and it’s weighing it. … I think we have a sound process of how we go by filtering through that information. It is awesome. It’s a fun night.”

Who did the Cardinals take in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft

Before Ossenfort’s latest draft trade, the franchise selected Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen III with the No. 16 overall pick.

They turned around and added Johnson (second round) and Burch (third) on Day 2 before bringing aboard Ohio State linebacker Cody Simon (fourth round) on Saturday.
