GCU men’s basketball nets 2 wing transfers from Gonzaga, UNLV

Grand Canyon men’s basketball received its first two transfer portal commitments of the cycle in Gonzaga’s Dusty Stromer and UNLV’s Jaden Henley.

Stromer played in 69 games over his two seasons in Spokane, averaging 4.6 points and 2.7 rebounds as he saw his minutes drop from 23.5 per game as a freshman to 17.5 per game as a sophomore.

The 6-foot-6 wing from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, was a top-50 recruit in 2023, according to 247 Sports’ composite ranking. He announced his decision Wednesday night.

Henley played 29.4 minutes per game at UNLV as a junior after previously spending time at Minnesota and DePaul. As a junior, he made 34 3s to more than double his total over the first two seasons (28) and did so on 35.1% efficiency.

At 6-foot-7, the top-200 prospect out of Ontario, Canada, in 2022 announced his choice Thursday morning.

What does Grand Canyon have to accomplish in transfer portal?

Given the departures the ‘Lopes have already seen in the portal, GCU is on track to bring back just 22% of its scoring from the 2024-25 season with guard Makaih Williams, wing Caleb Shaw and forward Traivar Jackson available to return.

Some impact players such as Ray Harrison, Tyon Grant-Foster, Collin Moore and Lok Wur have exhausted their eligibility while others — JaKobe Coles and Duke Brennan — are off to the portal.

GCU’s freshman trio of Sammie Yeanay, Austin Maurer and Styles Phipps also have all entered the portal.

It’s the biggest roster overhaul head coach Bryce Drew will undertake in a few years after taking the program to the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons.
