Corbin Carroll extends hit streak to 12 games, rest of Diamondbacks nearly no-hit in loss to Cubs

Corbin Carroll provided three of four Diamondbacks hits on Saturday, as his teammates were nearly no-hit in a 6-2 Arizona loss to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

With the three hits, which included a lead-off home run, the outfielder extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He has been held without a hit in just two of 21 games to start 2025.

Only St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan has a longer streak. He has 15 straight games with a hit going into the Cardinals’ afternoon matchup against the New York Mets on Saturday.

Four Diamondbacks worked walks, including two from designated hitter Pavin Smith, but Carroll was the only one to register a hit for Arizona until Tim Tawa had a solo homer with two outs in the ninth.

Geraldo Perdomo grounded out with Carroll at second after a walk following Tawa’s home run to end the game.

Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen weathers a rough start

Zac Gallen was roughed up in a hurry while laboring through the first two innings.

He got ahead of lead-off batter Ian Happ to a 1-2 count, but Happ turned things around to work a walk. Three of the next four Cubs got base hits, as Chicago erased what was previously a 1-0 advantage for the D-backs. Gallen escaped the inning with back-to-back strikeouts to strand runners on the corners.

His next inning started with a walk and a single, and it proved costly when Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch smacked back-to-back homers, coming after 1-2 and 0-2 counts to start each respective at-bat.

The homers gave Chicago a 6-1 lead after two innings, making it 17 Cubs runs in a four-inning span dating back to the wild finish on Friday.

Gallen was at 64 pitches through two innings, but he managed to hold it down the rest of the way, throwing 39 pitches over the next four innings. The six-inning effort was crucial after Arizona’s bullpen was largely unavailable on Friday due to prior workload.

Right-handed reliever Juan Morillo made his major league debut for Arizona in the seventh inning, striking out two and walking one on 20 pitches. Morillo, 26, was called up earlier in the day as a corresponding move with A.J. Puk heading to the IL.

J.P. Feyereisen made his Arizona debut after he was a similar call-up, throwing 23 pitches to get through the eighth inning, allowing one double. He came into the season with a 2.95 ERA in 100.2 innings pitched over four seasons.

Diamondbacks’ next game

The loss on Saturday gave Chicago the head-to-head tiebreaker over Arizona, with the Cubs having won four times before the seventh and final matchup of the season comes on Sunday.

Arizona can save itself from the series sweep when it throws Merrill Kelly (3-1, 5.57 ERA) against Jameson Taillon (1-1, 5.40) in a matchup of right-handers.
