Brandon Pfaadt bucks Diamondbacks’ 1st-inning trend vs. Orioles

The first inning has not been kind to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ starting rotation in recent games.

Entering play Wednesday, the D-backs had allowed at least one run in the first inning of their previous six games.

That was until starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt took the mound in a rubber match against Baltimore.

For the first time since April 2, Pfaadt and the D-backs got out of the first inning unscathed.

It was a strong showing from Pfaadt, who needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in 1-2-3 fashion.

He entered the tilt with the lowest ERA (5.25) among D-backs starting pitchers to go along with a 1-1 mark and one quality start across 12 innings pitched.

On top of the pitcher’s early showing, Arizona’s offense got on the board in a hurry on Wednesday thanks to Josh Naylor.

Needing just three pitches between the two of them, Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo opened up the bottom of the inning with pair of singles.

After a Pavin Smith strikeout, Naylor brought in Carroll on a sac fly.

Through three innings, the D-backs lead the Orioles, 2-0.
