Arizona Wildcats drop 3 spots to No. 4 in AP Top 25 poll, Michigan rises to No. 1

Following consecutive losses to Big 12 rivals Kansas and Texas Tech, the Arizona Wildcats (23-2) fell to No. 4 in this week’s edition of the AP Top 25 poll.

The previously undefeated, No.1-ranked Wildcats held the top spot for the past nine weeks, including the previous four weeks where they claimed all 59 first-place votes.

However, the Wildcats fell to the Jayhawks 82-78 at Allen Fieldhouse last Monday and dropped an overtime game at home to the Red Raiders on Saturday, a 78-75 loss.

Insult turned to injury for Arizona as the Wildcats were left with only six healthy rotational players after the loss against Texas Tech.

Entering Saturday’s game, Arizona was already without Dwayne Aristode due to the flu, and five-star freshman Koa Peat checked out of the game late in the first half and did not return due to a lower leg injury.

Coach Tommy Lloyd said the illness could see Aristode out for “a short while,” while Peat’s status going forward also remains uncertain.

“I mean we’re gonna figure it out. It’s a lower leg deal,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd told reporters immediately after Saturday’s game. “I know (athletic trainer Justin Kokoskie), and the doctors are on it, and I’m sure they’ll do some testing and we’ll figure out where it’s at, but I don’t have anything other than that.”

Arizona is 6-2 when playing ranked opponents this season, and the Wildcats’ scheduling gauntlet doesn’t get any easier this week. Arizona hosts No. 23 BYU on Wednesday and travels to No. 2 Houston on Saturday.

Big 12 watch

The Big 12 has six ranked teams, putting it in a tie with the Big Ten for the most ranked programs. In addition to Arizona, Houston is ranked No. 2, Iowa State dropped to No. 6, Kansas climbed to No. 8, Texas Tech rose to No. 13 and BYU fell to No. 23.
