As Arizona State guard Moe Odum prepares for the 2025-26 season, the senior stressed the importance of letting things come to him when it pertains to making plays as a point guard.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned from (Bobby Hurley) is to not make the spectacular plays every time and just make the simple read and it will fall in your lap,” Odum told ESPN’s Chancellor Johnson at Big 12 Media Day on Wednesday.
Odum was very effective as a ball distributor for Pepperdine as he was fourth in the nation with 7.5 assists per game last season. Odum’s skillset is much different from past guards in Hurley’s system, such as Shannon Evans and Tra Holder who were shoot-first guards while Odum’s game is more pass-first.
“My skillset I feel like is more very shifty and very different pace. Not too fast, not too slow,” Odum said.
Odum averaged 13.1 points, 7.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last season. He had a strong outing during Pepperdine’s WCC semifinals tournament run where he registered double-doubles in points and assists in three straight games.
Hurley complimented Odum’s ability to move the ball and his vision on the court last season with Pepperdine.
“He’s very shifty with the ball. He can create and he can escape different positions on the floor just off the dribble and he knows where everyone is,” Hurley told ESPN’s roundtable on Wednesday. “He really does a great job at finding people.”
Moe Odum, Sun Devils out to prove predictions wrong this season
ASU basketball enters the 2025-26 coming off a rough campaign last season where the Sun Devils finished 15th in the conference with a 13-20 record (4-16 in conference play).
The Sun Devils were picked to finish last in a Big 12 men’s preseason coaches poll earlier this month, something Odum said he and the Sun Devils are out to prove wrong this season.
“Voters will be wrong because they haven’t seen us play,” Odum said.
Odum among several new additions for ASU this season
Odum is one of several new additions to the Sun Devils after an offseason that saw much roster turnover with Trevor Best as the only returning player from last season.
The Sun Devils saw several international players added to the roster, including forward Andrija Grbovic and guard Noah Meeusen. Hurley said at Big 12 media day on Thursday that economics were one of the reasons ASU heavily recruited international players this offseason.
“The economics of this year’s portal was very expensive for American players,” Hurley said. “International players were happy to make a significant bump from where they were in Europe and wanting to come over to the United States and get an education and play in the best conference in the United States.”
