Fantasy Football Start’em, Sit’em Lineup Advice: Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Jacoby Brissett

Here’s our fantasy football Week 8 outlook for a few quarterbacks to help with lineup decisions.

Sam Darnold (QB – SEA) vs. Chicago Bears

Unfortunately, Sam Darnold has struggled to protect the ball this season. He has averaged 1.6 interceptions per game since returning from injury. By comparison, the veteran averaged 0.8 interceptions per game last season.

While turnovers have hurt Darnold’s fantasy production, the former USC star has shown he can capitalize on fantasy-friendly matchups. The veteran had 379 yards, four touchdowns and 27.7 fantasy points against the Washington Commanders in Week 3, his first game back from a soft-tissue injury. Thankfully, Darnold has another fantasy-friendly matchup on Monday night.

Chicago held opposing quarterbacks to fewer than 10.7 fantasy points in three of their first four games this season. However, their defense has been horrific lately. Last week, the Bears gave up 321 passing yards, two touchdowns, 26 rushing yards, a touchdown and 27.4 fantasy points to Drake Maye. Over the past three weeks, they’ve also surrendered 304.3 passing yards, 2.3 touchdowns and 25.2 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. More importantly, Chicago has allowed 23+ fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in more than half of their games this season.

Baker Mayfield (QB – TB) vs. Atlanta Falcons

After missing the past three games with a thumb injury, Baker Mayfield returned to the lineup in Week 7. The former Oklahoma star scored just 6.7 fantasy points in his first game back, after averaging 11.7 fantasy points per contest before getting hurt. However, fantasy players shouldn’t worry about his poor production, as the Buccaneers destroyed the Carolina Panthers. The blowout limited Mayfield to just 11 pass attempts on Sunday. Yet, he still managed to throw a touchdown. The veteran was also far more efficient than before the injury.

Before suffering the thumb injury, Mayfield averaged 0.3 fantasy points per pass attempt. By comparison, he averaged 0.6 fantasy points per pass attempt last week. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy scored only 12 fantasy points against the Falcons last week, totaling 288 passing yards and a touchdown. However, he was without his top three wide receivers, and Christian McCaffrey missed part of the game with an injury. By comparison, Atalanta had surrendered 278.2 passing yards, 1.8 touchdowns and 19.7 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks over their previous five matchups.

Jacoby Brissett (QB – ARI) vs. Dallas Cowboys

While Carson Beck will eventually take over under center for the Cardinals, Jacoby Brissett remains the starter and a fantasy streaming option. He has had an up-and-down season, scoring fewer than 10.5 fantasy points in nearly half the games. However, Brissett had 272 passing yards, a touchdown and 16.5 fantasy points last week despite facing an elite Denver Broncos defense. More importantly, he has averaged 16.9 fantasy points per game over the past five weeks, totaling 25+ points twice. Brissett has also played well against fantasy-friendly defenses.

The veteran was outstanding in the Week 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions’ fantasy-friendly defense, totaling 292 passing yards, three touchdowns and 25.3 fantasy points. Thankfully, Brissett faces the Cowboys’ struggling defense on Sunday. Before last night’s matchup against Tanner McKee without his top two wide receivers, Dallas surrendered 239.2 passing yards, 1.8 touchdowns, and 21.3 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks, allowing 20.2+ points to everyone except Jalon Daniels. The Cowboys should win, but I would rather start Brissett over Dak Prescott in Week 8.
